Beatles pre-recorded reel-to-reel tapes

I just bought a Pioneer RT-707 and a Pioneer RG-2 Dynamic Range Expander plus 5 blank Maxell tapes and 3 pre-recorded Beatles reel-to-reel tapes from a guy on CL today for $100. Did I do good or what?

Yeah, that sounds great. Beatles tapes have the boxes as well? Seems i have a R2R Magical Mystery Tour in very good condition in a closet somewhere....hmmmm.

Do pre-recorded R2R have it over vinyl....Anyone?

I'll have to play Abbey Road and The White Album because there's no leader tape on either of those so I don't know if any of the album is missing - the other one has the leader tape so I'm pretty sure all of it is there. But I still think it's pretty cool either way.

I also bought about 200 albums from him - and about 50 of those are Beatles. I was looking at them and there are alot of mono albums in the group.

Only if they're recorded at 7 1/2 ips. The 3 3/4 ips speed is really for speech recording and economizing tape at the expense of sound quality.

You did good.. My wife bought the 65 tape off the bay for $65, and that was only by a last second snipe. A couple people kept bidding it up at the last few seconds..

Well, the '65 tape is all there, the Abbey Road tape was on the White Album reel , it is all there, and I don't know what the hell is on the White Album reel but it ain't the White Album. I think the guy probably left it on whatever he used for the take up and has it out in his garage with the 50 or so tapes he recorded. I'll give him a call tomorrow and see if he'll let me borrow them and see if I can find the reel that it's on.

But, hey, the Abbey Road sounds pretty damn good and it's all there. The leader tape must have broken off at one point.

Actually I think the leader tape is usually added by the original purchaser. when I have seen Pre recorded reels, they almost always lack leader. I could be wrong though maybe some labels added it and some didnt.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I do know that it takes a little while for it to start playing. At first I thought it was blank.

I keep a splicing bench nearby, and slide it over as needed. I bought reflective tape, despite my Pioneer RT–1020A not being an auto reverse. I may trade out of this one someday, or get a 707 or other nice 7" Open Reel. The block was the highest price. It was $32.60. The rest are splicing tape, and leader tape. The most speedy thing besides RTR pre-recorded releases, that I intend to buy, is a Bulk Erasing table or rotating eraser.
