Is it possible to hook up two turntables up to the phono jack of one receiver, like by using a Y-connection?

I'd like to A/B my turntables, but not if it's an issue for my equipment

As long as you only had one on at a time, probably wouldn't hurt anything. Keep in mind though, that of all the sources you input to the receiver, the phono input is probably the smallest. (lowest signal strength) Using extra cables, adapters, or switch boxes, might noticeably affect the sound quality, and/or volume of the signal. I'm not big believer of interconnects making a large difference in sound, but IMHO, the TT IC's is another matter, because it's such a small signal to start with.

It's probably not possible to put two TT's in parallel: the signal of one TT is likely to 'leak' into the second TT since the Impedance (or electrical resistance) of the second cartridge is probably much lower than that of the phono stage of your receiver. A second dedicated phono preamp connected to a line level input of your receiver is the way to go.
 
Yes, it's possible to parallel two turntables into a single phono input, but the results are not going to be good and I do not recommend it.

Alternates include an A / B switch box, garage-a-records.com sells one.

Another option includes using female RCA couplers between short RCA phono cables between each turntable and the phono input. Using the couplers reduces wear caused by frequent swapping cables at the receiver and turntable (if so equipped) jacks. The disadavantage is the handling of cables when switching turntables, but will probably provide better performance than the A / B switches.

The best and most convienent way is to have one turntable on the phono input and have the second table connected to an external phono preamp and run that into an unused line level input.
 
This is not really an answer, but may be of interest.

The Quad 44 Pre amp has input modules that can be changed. It is normally supplied with one disc input module, but for instance, one of the tape modules could be removed and a second disc module fitted.

One way of two into one might be to get two phono pre amps and feed both their outputs to an Aux input on the amp. At least the two pickup cartridges will see the correct load.
 
A very wise rule of thumb to remember, and you will never have to worry about blowing things up... "Never hook an output to an output" .. this includes tying them together parallel...
 
I can't see a problem with that.
I used to do that with my old stereo. It just had one AUX jack, and the unit itself just had an AM/FM tuner and a broken 8 track player, so I had a turntable, cassette, CD, and 8 track hooked up to it. I never had any problems.

Radio Shack carried a stereo audio selector for three inputs cat no 42-2110. I don't know if they still sell it.
 
Absolutely use the switch. A phono cartridge is essentially a high impedance current source, or simply put, an ac generator. To put two of them in parallel would be to hook two of them together, and that would be one generator trying to drive another generator and then whatever is left over would go to the phono input.
This would really screw up your frequency response and cause peaks and output voltage.
