What are the best-sounding large boomboxes from the end of 1970s-beginning of 1980s?
I am talking about Sharp GF-777 class models.

I don't know if it's possible to best this baby right here, National/Panasonic RX-7000, original MSRP $850, and that's in 1980 dollars, they go for much more now. I could just be biased as I happen to own one but not as minty as the one pictured (I use it as a job site radio, LOL).

My vote was this one

JVC PC5-jw.. Had one of these for years,. This was the bedroom stereo for years, then my sons stereo for a while. Separatable 12 watt integrated amp, Tuner was fair, Cassette deck held the batteries and was a stand alone portable deck with mic inpiuts chrome tape and ANRS. Was a great audience recorder and used it till I got a Sony wm7dc. Made great tapes. Speakers were wooden enclsures and were only full range. Replaced the driver with a Pioneer dual cone car speaker, and it was good for low expectations. Used the wrong polarity car adaptor one day and ruined electronics in cassett deck, sold it on e-bay for a tidy some.Would still like to have back. Jim :tears:

This one is looking good and not available for sale anywhere :-) Maybe I should trade in my restored Pioneer CT-F1250?
I think there is a similar model RX-7200 for japan but with 76.1-89.9 FM band?

Mine was ground shipped to me from Korea, LOL, took almost 3 months, I think the guy actually walked it here.

Purchased on eBay.

For me, its only THE HELIX
helix_hx-4635_1_big.jpg

the go-to hollywood prop for the biggest baddest gaudiest of them all. Analog VU meters, Led lamps, weird dual cassette arrangement. But 30wpc and 8"woofers.

Best one I've heard so far is the Telefunken Studio 1M, but I'm not sure if it's a true 80's box or late 70's box. And it's also a 3-piece, as opposed to the classic 1-piece.
I have yet to hear a Panny 7000-Series or 5350, but reliable sources tell me they sound excellent.

The Panasonic RX 5080 is an unassuming sleeper with a very sweet sound. Father in law had one, I inherited it and used it as my job radio for yrs, would love another so my RX 7000 can stay at home where it belongs. I've bid on a few but didn't win, priorities prevent me from just throwing money at one just to own it.

Once you feel the heavily weighted tuning knob on the 7000 all doubts about its build quality disappear.

heard them all... including the 1M it is only bested by the boxes with STK outputs and nice speakers

I've had a couple Panasonic RX-5050s. They sound quite good. Best, who knows? I've not A-B'd any of them. I do have one of these, Panasonic RX-6400. It is not that great, sorely lacking in the speaker department. I might take a crack at new speakers/crossover shoehorned into the cabs at some point as the electronics are not bad -

Panasonic RX-DS30. Late 80's. I want to say 1989-1990...

It's interesting that in reviews Sharp GF-777 overperforms National RX-7000 in sound quality.
