Best speaker score under $100

:thmbsp:Could you build a pair for $20? If you consider all the labor, time, and materials that go into a "well made" pair of speakers or any vintage gear for that matter, the answer is an astounding NO. And compare to similar gear of today! I really don't mind paying $100 bucks for something that I will enjoy for a long time.
That's how I look at it, :)

ps It keeps the landfills from filling up when you save old gear!

$100 I can see, but $500 to $1000? Go check the auction sites.....it's crazy! And don't get me wrong.....I am nearly a 100% "vintage" guy. And I like the idea of saving vintage gear. I hate it when people part out perfectly good vintage speakers simply to profit. But I am a collector and not a flipper.

Just not sure if paying less than $100 is truly getting a score or simply paying what a 40 year old pair of speakers are worth. I like using the L88 Nova's as an example, since the "perceived" value seems many times higher than the "perceived" sound quality.

Not my only, but my best and favorite;
KEF 103.2 $10 at unclaimed storage store
Dynaco A25 at yard sale
Polk Monitor 7 w/ Peerless tweeter, free from brother-in-law
Love this thread!

So just 1 best score under 100$? Probably the Tannoy 609s I got for $50.

Radio Shack

Realistic Solo 4s for $38.90 for the pair back in '75. Half a month's salary from Seattle Times route #054.
Brand new.
Suck it, cheapskates.

Hahaha Porkloin!!

One other thing about asking too much for vintage gear, anything is worth only as much as someone is willing to pay, also where I live vintage gear is harder to come by than some places which seems to drive prices up considerably. If you go down to the local used goods store, they were asking $450 for a pair of Klipsch Fortes, and they sold in 1 day! Somewhere else, someone may have gotten those at a garage sale for $10. It's all subjective really :)
I think more threads like this one could help bring prices back down to Earth when the thrift stores look up prices and see the great deals that we all got.:) I always inform the managers that ebuy prices are grossly inflated, and often items don't even sell at those prices because they get relisted every week.
Good hunting all, and keep the great deals coming!!!

I've had hundreds of speaker purchases over the years but these are the absolute best -

(3) WE 728B, free, (2) in factory cabs
(1) WE 755A, free
(2) WE 755A, $45, radio station purchase,
(1) WE 720A, really cheap hamfest buy
(1) WE 555, really cheap hamfest buy

All long gone. Listened to the 728Bs & 755As, the 755As do have some magic to them.

Scored a pair of HPM 100, 200 watt version for 50 bucks last year. Someone at work posted on board when moving. I scarfed them right up.

Like new condition too.

Got my infinity's at an Auction for $10...Though they did need the woofers re foamed couldn't believe no one else Bid on them...And last week I found a pair of Yamaha NS-10M monitors at a charity shop for $10!! could not believe my luck, they are in really good order also...
To be honest, most of my best gear has come like this, If you are patient and dedicated to the hunt...you shall find.

A single AR2 from CL, in very nice shape, $35. Not a bad deal, will need re-cap, but the woofer rebounds SLOWLY when gently pushed in a bit, so I probably won't re-seal the surrounds. All is there and has never been opened. It apparently was "antiqued" when new, not a bad job, I guess these came unfinished. I can't wait to hear it.

I assume she was also selling her husband's Porsche for $100?

Altec Valencias for $65 at Salvation Army.

Score!

Polk Monitor 7Bs free from another AK member. They looked a bit tired when I picked them up, but since they had Peerless tweeters I felt they were worthy of updating. So driver baskets damped, crossovers recapped and cabinets stripped then re-veneered in walnut.
