Bokeh! show it off

So far to me, the best picture (okay, or not Bokeh) to me, was the Post from fmueller (the ADC needle on the LP. 2nd pic ) Mine don't even come close.

My neck hasn't recovered from this shot ; titled "Blow me"

Recent stuff of mine, more or less "bokeh"...

Sunflower.jpg

Soft, geometric background

BirdInField.jpg

Not much blur in foreground or background, but enough to draw you to the subject. And, I was afraid to scare the bird away!

These were all taken with a Sony DSC-H3 "super-zoom" compact. Not great, but the best I've got in digital right now.

Here are a couple photos I took in the backyard and one of our Dachshund with a nine blade Sigma 20mm prime lens.

I like # 1, 2, and 4 right off the bat, but I wonder how # 3 would look if the sharp focus (arrows) was somewhere else

OK, here's some bokeh for you.
I like shooting dragonflies. I would like to get a shot of one in mid-flight. But they are so erratic in their flight that it is very hard to do.

um... bokeh (teru) also means spaced out/airhead.

I like that kind :) You'all have some wonderful stuff here.

To me it's all about whether the background adds to the image (message) or detracts and makes busy. For instance, circular highlights are OK with me if they are soft enough and working against geometric composition.

Boken - eye of the beholder

I see the true artistry on this thread and all the different meanings that boken takes on. I believe it's also an illusion as seen in my pictures bellow. Notice the glowing balls that highlight my muscles which are actual beads of sweat. Next to me although it looks like a T-Rex it's actually the blurred image of my wife Maria.

Now the second photo is of Me and the illusion of a bed of roses, actually a crowd of people cheering me on as I won the Mr Olympian Title. Again notice the beads of sweat as they resemble glowing balls on my muscles.

Bokeh occurs for parts of the scene that lie outside the depth of field. Photographers sometimes deliberately use a shallow focus technique to create images with prominent out-of-focus regions.

Bokeh is often most visible around small background highlights, such as specular reflections and light sources, which is why it often associated with such areas.[1] However, bokeh is not limited to highlights, as blur occurs in all out-of-focus regions of the image. Bokeh can also be viewed by forcefully blurring one's vision while looking at a small light, like an LED.

While your grasp of the Japanese style Bokeh is masterful your composition is lacking.

May I suggest you reconsider your cropping. See rule of thirds. I would have shot this pic something like this. Hope You don't mind I took liberties with your image.

Thank You Mr Handy Hamlet. We're all entitled to our own opinions, even if yours is wrong.

Just don't mess with Maria, T-Rex or not.

on the edge of a forest.. wild orchid flowers starting to bloom. ummm, bokeh-licious :D

Bokeh is a lil like porn. You know it when u see it. This flower shot is simply soft and OOF. Bokeh is non existent since there is no central focus point. Longer fast zooms tend to provide more opportunities for bokeh but much of what you get is both lens dependant ( the number of aperture blades) and the skill of the photographer. Give me a fast 50 and I can make lots of pretty bokeh all day.

Definately not "bokeh", but thought I'd share this oddball pic that was shot with a tempermental Canon AE-1 about twenty years ago.
It appears the flash had fired and possibly reflected off something, but haven't a clue as to what it was aimed at.

Just now noticed there was a photography section, so here's a corner of a peanut butter and banana sandwich I ate a few months ago.

proof that pictures are all around you if you look...

I almost had one of these (sandwiches, not pictures) today, but I had other "must-goes" in the fridge
