Boom: America’s answer to Concorde completes its first supersonic flight

But wasn't the public's objection to sonic booms one of the reasons for the Concorde's ceasing operation? Even if everything else involved in this new venture work out, won't sonic booms still be an inescapable problem?

No it’s not supposed to have a boom !

No, it just went subsonic over land. This new aircraft will minimise that.

Concord was becoming less comercially viable and the Paris engine fire crash put an end to it's illustrious and glamorous career.

I remember when I was in Cyprus it flew down the Med every day and you could hear the muffled double sonic boom.

It all sounds too good to be true. It’s faster, more efficient, and cheaper than a typical airliner? Sure…

Anywhere in the world in 4 hours for $100? That guy is smoking crack. lol

It says it holds 80 passengers max. At $100 bux each that’s 8 grand. Has anyone looked to see how much the fuel bill is for a commercial flight?

90 minutes from New York to Paris
Well, by 76 we'll be a-OK
What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free

What a glorious time to be free, oh

International Geophysical Year - love it!

A very good point indeed.

From an internet search of jetliner fuel costs.

(And let's not forget, flight crew, apron fees, and all the other associated operating costs ain't exactly cheap either)

On an Orly-Newark flight, an A321 Neo carries 20t of fuel, equivalent to a $10,000 refuelling. An A380, on the other hand, carried around 88t for a Paris-New York flight! But remember: it carried almost 500 passengers, compared with 76 for La Compagnie’s 321 Neo, used as an example here.

In 2019, The Points Guy website calculated the price of a full tank for certain flights:

  • From New York JFK to London Heathrow: $27,270
  • Return flight from London Heathrow to JFK: $33,411
  • New York JFK – Los Angles: $10 757
  • Los Angeles – Tokyo Narita : $19 190
  • Chicago – Miami : $4 747
  • Miami – Chicago : $7 201

And while they’ll probably make a little bit extra carrying some cargo, it’s not going to be much on that jet.

Like mentioned above, it’s a way for people that have the extra $$$$ to get to their destination quicker. Not for the average Joe. I don’t see these as the Southwest of supersonic jets ;)

We won't have to think about commercial supersonic travel too soon. The XB-1 is just a proof in concept and not much larger than a current fighter. An 80 passenger sized jet would be closer to 5x-10x the size of the XB-1. We probably won't see the real thing test flown until 2026 at the earliest.

We've researched supersonic flight a lot.

Much enthusiasm. No sarcasm. A way to get real people to real places faster and potentially more efficiently? I'm in. WAY more in than I am for other types of "progress" currently being embraced ( "AI" and "social media," I'm looking at you).

Air is thinner at altitude so as planes burn fuel, they climb to maximize range.

Some of that sounds like the hype that surrounded Hyperloop. There was enough quasi-science behind HL to lure in uneducated money men but it proved impossible to build. Boom does have some interesting science. The higher a plane can fly, the thinner the air is so air resistance becomes less. At hyper-sonic speeds, engines can operate as ram jets which are more efficient the faster the plane goes. I have not read the white papers that must exist to convince investors and public opinion. SR71's performance must feature prominently.
