I have to get Dire Straits. Not sure why I don't have any of their LP/CD's. I listen to my II's M-F 8-5. Can't wait to get them home, though I'm enjoying them here.

You`re certainly right about the resale value....I just recently looked at several on eBay, and was quite shocked at some of the selling prices !
I think more and more people are becoming aware of the value of nice vintage stereo gear, and are willing to pay a good buck for quality pieces....
After I refoamed mine and used them, they sound like a pair of 12s. Very impressive bass and the other voicing characteristics are easily modified with the amplifiers' Mid and Treble controls. I modded them, after a while, after I decided I had the power for it. I put low-pass crossovers on the woofers and re-wired them to run in parallel. Results = Astounding. By the way, I have the Series II that I run with my Technics SA-700.

I see that MFSL has released "Brothers In Arms" on a 180 gr.vinyl, 2-LP set, recorded at 45 RPM. I don`t have it yet, but it`s on my short list....:thmbsp:

Nope.....I have went thru about six to eight sets of II's and III's and Asians have bought every set.

Same with JBL, AR and many other highly regarded "vintage" speakers. I've read complaints posted here, on AK, about speakers leaving the U.S. market. I just say "oh well". As long as our economy sucks, and people don't have the means, or appreciation to some degree, other people in other countries will buy the product. I guess you could say "our loss, their gain". Eh?
They have been banging the vintage tube and JBL market for 30 years. Funny what they get the itch for sometimes.

For now I'll be hanging onto my Bose 901, 601 and my AR3a. I don't think they have any interest in my other gear. Have some DSS9 in transit.

Meh....I need to refoam woofers on almost every set I get. Not too impressed with baskets but they managed to make them sound pretty good. I will take the 901's anyday and think they are the best value on the market. I got the mint Continentals and will take 400w and nothing has been done to them for 40 yrs. and sound awesone with the recapped equalizer. With the chrome stands, eq, and speakers, I have $350 in them. Those 601 series III's go over there for $800-900....and I scratch my head.
If you could, I'd like to know more about that.
It is what it is. We do the same thing with many things here, importing exotic (to us) stuff from far and wide.

When they arrive, safely, I'll start a post. If they don't, I'll be crying for a short while.
I know this thread is old but maybe someone can help? Just refoamed 601 seris II and I noticed the caps and resistors in the left and right speakers have different values. Is this normal? They are factory as I got these from the original owner and they had never been opened up. The right speaker is very bright and the left is rather dull. Any ideas?

Maybe a mishap on the assembly line?? The woofers roll off, naturally, so these are strictly for the tweets. I'd change out both sets with some Dayton 5%. Why these instead of 1%?? Cheaper, and they test out to 2 to 3 % anyway.
I THINK mine are here somewhere in this thread, values should be there as well. I'll see if I can find out what the value in mine is.

I'd hold up. There were, and I'll double check, two versions, early and late. Check and post the serial numbers of the cabinets.

I have 501's out in the garage. Believe it or not, RS woofers sound way better then the stock ones (I can pull one and give you the model number if interested). That's the only thing I did to mine. Same caps and whatever in them and they can take the power of a Phase Linear 400 pretty well. My only real complaint is that they are light for their large size and a PL400 will move them across the concrete floor sort of like the mysteriously moving rocks out in the desert but no rattling at all. Even ran them with the Peavey CS-800 for awhile and they survived no sweat
I would like to redo the grills at some point and maybe look into the parts crossover components I have kicking around to see if I have anything to upgrade the internals that makes sense. If I could get it in them, I would put one of my Olympic 35lb plates in each one

I just got a pair of 601 series III's lately and found the original surrounds in perfect shape. I always have had to refoam the woofers because of their age but this pair was in storage for a long time. Anyways..... when I played them, it was incredible how much better they sounded than the many other pairs I have had and refoamed...and all had been played on same system. I could only deduct that the original foams were the difference. Weird....I know....but I almost kept them...they sounded so good. Just a step above the others I had.
The knowledgeable buyers must have known this difference too as they went crazy emailing me trying to get them....and sold for the most I have ever gotten for them.
