Bose 601 "owner" opinions please

As for the top, I'd try to repair the plastic one. And no, Bose no longer has those available, I'm sorry to say.

Anything blocking the tweeters cancels out the inherent reflective nature of the speaker.

As for the vinyl wrap, what I did was use ICE spray wax for automobiles after a good scrubbing, and they got much better. No use in veneering these, that's like putting lipstick on a pig, tho I know it would look far nicer.

I'd just refoam and repair, and enjoy. If the plastic grills are unfixable, then simply remove the plastic sides and grills altogether. Also, I ended up putting the top woofers on bottom, and vice versa. Looked better, to me, and helps with the eventual basket sag. Might want to turn them 180 degrees as well, as a precaution.
 
As for the broken pieces, I see you're missing approximately 10 of the little slats?

Screw it, put that on the outside and call it good, assuming it is the "left" speaker. I think they're mirror imaged, but I may be wrong.

I'm very easily powering my pair with a 90 wpc Carver, and wouldn't hesitate to use much less.

If the first watt sucks, what good are 200 more? Enjoy what you have, and don't make a purchase unless you know the facts. I turned down a beautiful Kenwood KR9600 simply because I have...

1) A restored Sansui 9090db
2) A restored Pioneer SX-1250
3) A restored Pioneer SX-1010

so when would I get time to play this one?

Don't get over eager and buy anything in sight (unless it is a helluva deal) and spend money wisely. Assume every amp you buy will at the very least need some bench time and components replaced (they're getting very long in the tooth these days) and factor that in.

Ok, I will bite. The point I would like to make here is that the Bose 601's
are not very efficent speakers.

Long in the tooth is right, with the oldies. I have a seconed SX-1050 in the shop for a full recap and agree 120wpc. or more may not be needed.

I ran my 601's on a SX-780,45wpc.Rec.for years and did not get out of them what they are capable of IMHO.

I run my Bose now with a Sony 80wpc.and use them on a TV/CD,
Two channel A/B set up.

I'm betting that's a good number in general. I've run my 901 and now my 501 with my STA-2000 (75wpc) with no issues and plenty of giddy up. I haven't run the 601 yet as they are in pieces at the moment. But some day. :)

Oh, completely agree with you in that a stouter amp will reveal more and generally sound better. Something about more damping and control, I dunno. Yes, to get maximum return, more watts wouldn't hurt.

I'm really digging mono albums with my pair, since their imaging is a weak point. Mono albums really seem to leap out at me on this Carver 900/Bose 601 II's system.

Yeah, I have better gear, but this sure gets plenty of listen time!
 
Ok,have the weekend off,thought I'd be able to stop by one of my local speaker stores and pick up some foams for the 601-II's,NOT!
Both closed on Saturday!!!Simply Speakers,and Speaker Exchange both...

I'm with OJ on this...I've used a 50watt Fisher, 60watt Pioneer & 80watt Realistic.....as long as the source is good, the 601 will please-
 
I`ve had a pair of 601 Series IIs in my collection for about 30 years. Purchased them from a Lafayette Radio Electronics store that was about to close it`s doors for good. IMHO, these are speakers that give their best when driven by adequate horsepower....I`ve run them off a Carver M500t, and also a Pioneer SX-1250. They sound smooth, open, and nicely-detailed, with substantial bass energy with either amp.

I normally use Dire Straits` "Brothers In Arms" album as one of my reference sources when auditioning speakers, it covers all the frequency ranges quite nicely. To my ears, the 601s really do it justice.
