Brett A's Playlist.

I am more interested in why you choose to listen to an album and the synchronicity that ensues when choosing the next album. Some nights I am playing only the best sounding stuff I own: best engineered and mastered, etc. That leads to things like Madonna and the Bangles, which aren't my favorite things in general. Also, if I were listening to Rush, it would mean that my wife wasn't home. I think you should adopt more of a blogging style and make it a little more personal. No one has done this before on AK and you should experiment and find your groove with this thread.

(...). I think you should adopt more of a blogging style and make it a little more personal. No one has done this before on AK and you should experiment and find your groove with this thread.
Thanks for the idea and encouragement. I'll do what I can. Time can be a factor (although you wouldn't necessarily tell by the time I take to upload photos)
Here goes:

I worked late yesterday welcoming and orienting 100 people to our facility. I was pretty fried when I got home around 9:00pm and wanted something soothing and engaging at the same time. So I put on some Moroccan Trance Music (Gnawa tradition).

This particular CD by Maleem Abdallah Ghania uses handclaps instead of the more traditional and ubiquitous Qaraqib. So you get the soothing, hypnotic rhythm of the camel-skinned Sintir and voices without the metallic drone.

Then I went to bed.

This morning, I wanted to put something on that would help the little missus ease into consciousness upstairs with her tea in bed. So I put on Cal Tjader his collection from the "Round Mignight series of CDs

attachment.php

Then, I went out and washed my car and found Bruce Srpeingteen in my head. So when I was finished washing, I put on Born to Run on the old Rek-O-Kut.

I have 2 copies of this LP. This one is stamped on the back in gold letters "For Military Sale only" --never seen that before. The LP its self is the same.

Then, on the way to work:
Birth of the Dead

(no, I wasn't moving when I took this picture)

Ok, when I got home from The Valley (Amherst) last night, I wanted to listen to Lenny's "Songs of Love and Hate" again. (I wasn't diggin the little missus too much last night) This time on CD. Which I have in a little hardbound version with booklet and alternate take of Dress Rehearsal Rag as a bonus track (I always hated the term bonus track)

attachment.php

Then, to take me up to the time to go to bed, I listened to Will Oldham/Palace's - Arise Therefore.. This has got to be one of my all-time favorite albums from anyone---ever.

attachment.php

Then I went to bed.

This morning all I've listened to is Walter Davis Complete Recorded Works Vol 3: May 37 to June 38 (the only volume I have). With headphones and coffee.

OK. Before I left for work, I listened to most of Lambchop-Is a Woman. One of the best sounding CDs in exsistence IMO. I like everything I've heard that has been engineered by Mark Nevers.
attachment.php

Then, on the way into work and while doing errands on the way, it was His Bobness - Bootleg Series (first set) Disc 3 I took this shot while driving to work.

Last night I got home late again (9:30ish) and relaxed by re-terminating my new (to me) speaker cables. Don't know why, but I wanted to listen to John Coltrane's- My Favorite Thing first upon hooking them up.
So I put on Disc 4 of John Coltrane - Heavyweight Champion, started it on Favorite things, and listened through to the end. Mostly tunes that landed on his Favorite Things and Coltrane's Sound albums.

attachment.php

After that, I had the urge to listen to Burning Spear-Markus Garvey which I probably haven't played in a year or more. After about 5 or 6 tracks, I went up to bed.

attachment.php

Then, this morning, starting around 6:30, I sat on the couch with coffee and listened to Jessica Williams - Live at Yoshi's Vol I (that's my cereal bowl).
I highly recommend this CD and/or it's companion Vol II to anyone interested in live jazz. This is her piano trio and has everything; drive, swing, power, beauty, tunefulness, technique. It's very listenable and although the recording's sound-stage is all wrong (drum kit panned across the whole "view" Ms Williams' left hand in the left speaker. right in the right...), the overall tone and clarity of the recording are very good.

Wow! Wow! From Coltrane to Burning Spear! :D

from Coltrane's later Atlantic tracks to Burning Spead didn't seem like a huge step rhythmically at least-and overall tone now that I think about it. although Burning Spear does have a lot of gravity whereas Coltrane is more ethereal. At least as it meets my ears and skin.

right now, I'm on the couch w/coffee #2 typing on my phone listening to Fleetwood Mac - Bare Trees (lp). I did not know until about a month ago that these guys did "Sentimental Lady" and that I actually remember the title track from the radio of yore.

Yesterday while sitting on the porch, the song "I still Think About You Every time I'm Riding in my Car" so I went in and listened to Peek-A-Boo - The Best of NRBQ (disc one)

attachment.php

I nearly fell asleep with the LP on: Taj Mahal - Oh So Good n' Blue My favorite one of his albums. Nice and acoutic and gritty and smooth all at once.

This morning, it was Steve Forbert again on my way the the flea market

attachment.php

And coming home, this Coltrane and Burrell CD I got there for $2.00 (the going rate for CDs at the flea market)

Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (1966 Original Off-Broadway Cast) (CD)
I've found out about, and grown to like, Jaques Brel through Early Scott Walker albums (Scott 1 through Scott 3)

Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, I sat and listened to this CD which I also got at the fela market:

Boss Tenors - Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons - Straight ahead from Chicago 1961

attachment.php

I listened to it all the way through again!before going up to bed. (My wife even liked it)

I think this one may get some heavy play in the days to come. Not just exciting music, but well recorded too!

Then, this morning about 6:30 am with coffee and headphones, another complete run through of Albert Ayler - Spiritual Unity. (it was playing in my head already)

See? Coffee and headphones:

On the half hour commute to work, it was Third World- 96 Degrees in the Shade. My favorite Third World ablum. I've had a copy of it since back in the late 80's.

attachment.php

Here's a video of it playing in my car on the penultimate mile of my commute.
(No, I wasn't looking through the camera while driving. Just holding it up with my right hand.)

I think I hear Jackie Mitto. Is he on this?

A very good album, though I'm partial to The Story's Been Told. The title track is great.

Last night, I fell asleep on the couch about 5 tracks into Scott Walker - The Drift. One of my absolute favorite discoveries this decade.
There's the opening track:

I woke up this morning around 6:15, made coffee and put on Scott Walker - Scott 2. (I had the tune "Jackie" playing in my head)

I followed Scott with Ornette Coleman - Change of the Century (reissue LP)

For some reason, all this relative weirdness got me thinking about Fleetwood Nicks. So I put on their Greatest Hits:

Then, to continue a morning of weirdness, I rocked out to The Stanley Brothers on the way to work.
Video of same.

It'll kind of be all over the place like this until I find a new musical discovery or re-obsession. You'll know when that happens.

Hey Brett, my Steve Forbert disc showed up today. I'm about to put it on for a spin. Being the cheap guy that I am, I picked up a used CD. It's signed by Steve Forbert...to Dale. So cheers to Brett and Dale for the Steve Forbert connection.

Ok, so far this evening, I've just been listening to CDs that caught my eye. Without a lot of thinking. Here's what's happened so far.

Well, actually, I wanted to hear Coltrane's My Favorite Things, but I also wanted a certain level of Fidelity, so I put on disc two of John Coltrane - One Up, One Down, Live at the Half Note

attachment.php

From here, I just kind of winged it.
Right after Coltrane, I listened to the whole of Dwight Yokam - A Long Way Home. I haven't listened to this CD in two years probably. I forgot how excellent it is!

attachment.php

After Dwight, it was Neil Young - Comes a Time (CD)
attachment.php

Followed by Olatunji - Drums of Passion. I used to listen to this one a lot back in the 90's when I was a hippie in a VW bus.
attachment.php

Right now in the other room, Bob Dylan's Highway 61 is playing Tombstone Blues. I'm going to go sit and listen to something else now. I'll let you know what it turns out to be.
...So it turned out to be side 2 of Tanita Tikaram - Ancient Heart (LP)

So this morning with coffee, I gave another listen to Tanita Tikaram - Acnient Heart. LP

You may remember her song Twist in my Sobriety from 1988.

For some reason, that tune reminded me of Sweet Home Alabama, so I put on Lynyrd Skynyrd - All Time Greatest Hits (cd)--played it all the way through

attachment.php

I followed this on the commute with another Dwight Yoakum; Gone
