Brett A's Playlist.

This morning, it was Patato - The Legend of Cuban Percussion. I had the good fortune to see Carlos "Patato" Valdes play at the Academy of Music in Northampton, MA around 2004 (I think) He has since passed away. This CD is brilliant sounding both musically and technically.

attachment.php

Then on the way in to work, I listened to John Prine - Self Titled first album. This is another CDr burned from the LP I have in my collection. Here's a shot of it in the webbed shade of my Mini's sunroof.

Why? -because-. That's why.

Ok, this morning, it was Marianne Faithfull - Easy Come Easy Go: 12 songs for music lovers This is a recent release by one of my absolute favorite female singers. She just keeps getting better with age. This is a collection of other peoples' songs and opens with Dolly Parton's morbid ballad "Down from Dover" The sound quality is up there too! (Much better than the SQ on Before the Poison, which is a better collection of songs IMO)
attachment.php

I followed this with the first half of the CD form Clarence Penn- Penn's Landing. A balls-to-the-wall drum-driven, pianoless jazz quartet. A great disc to test your system's transients.
attachment.php

Then, on the way into work, the nicest, most talented group of anarchists in the business The Mekons - Out of Our Heads

Last night I got home kind of late (9:00ish) and sat and listened to Led Zeppelin - I. The first CD in the boxed set reissue. Which, BTW, is one of the worst sounding reissues I have come across. The signal is over saturated so there's a distracting amount of distortion. Still, it's fun to listen to.
attachment.php

This morning, I woke up with Beefheart's "Thousand and Tenth Day of the Human Totem Pole" n my head. Probably becasue I drove by Dunn park in Gardner MA a couple days ago and was surprised to see that they have preserved the totem pole that has been there since I was a kid. It;s the only totem pole I know, so the song brings me back to Dunn Park as a 6 year old.

So of course I sat through side 2 of Captain Beefheart -Ice Cream for Crow. If you don't know this Beefheart album, you really ought to check it out. It was his last and one of my favorites. Excellent throughout.
attachment.php

After that, I dusted off (literally) my SACD player that i keep nearby to play the 4 SACDs I own. I spun Jerry Garcia - Keystone Vol I SACD
attachment.php

Then, for the commute, it was Snoop Dogg - Doggy Style. Which in my honest opinion is a modern classic that every serious music lover should have and know.

Brett...nice music library you have there. I also love it when you display the vinyl or cd with your gear. Many of us love to look at eye candy.

Thanks. I've never really thought of it as a library before. :scratch2:

So, a little catching up. Two nights ago, I sat and listened to the first half of Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland (or is it Lady Land?)

attachment.php

Yesterday morning, it was ZZ Top - Degüello.
attachment.php

And last night when I got home from another down-and-back to NYC, I finished Electric Lady land and went on to John Coltrane - A Love Supreme SACD

attachment.php

This morning, it was
Tinariwen-Aman Iman : Water Is Life
attachment.php

attachment.php

Greg Brown - One More Good Night Kiss

attachment.php

And, during the commute, it was The Modern Lovers - Self titled.

attachment.php

`

if you look closely at the stop sign, it says STOP "listening to awful music".

.
attachment.php

And for the end of the commute, I started once more into Dwight Yoakam - A Long Way Home. I really, really like this CD.

Also yesterday (Saturday) before work (I went in at noon) I listened to Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark. This is still the same copy I bought back in the mid-eighties. It was one of the first handful of CDs I bought. Probably around 1984. Still plays well. A little rot around the edjes, but no holes through the playing area (like some other CDs I have from that era)

attachment.php

Then last night when I got home from work around 9:00, I guess I was in a cello mood. I listened to Franz Schubert quintet for 2 violins, viola and 2 cellos in C. Maj D.956 on this CD:
attachment.php

Then Hayden: Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major from this CD:
attachment.php

And this morning (I slept 'til 11) it's been one of my favorite non-symphonic classical pieces, Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor K.466 It's VERY rock n'roll. Especially this recording by the LSO conducted by Andre Previn and featuring Radu Lupu on piano.

I also get a kick out of the fact that they look really stoned on this album cover.

I bought a couple more Dwight Yoakam CDs yesterday. Last night I sat and listened to This Time:
(the Bleeker St. Records bag is from my visit there last Thursday. I bought Scott Walker - Tilt on LP. (Haven't opened it yet)

attachment.php

This morning, while trying both copies I have of Neil young- After the Gold Rush, I realized I still need a decent copy. One of these has a slight warp on the outside track and the other has some pop and crackle damage. Still, I listened to it all the way through. Side one of one LP and side two of the other.

attachment.php

I took an interest in The Supremes while sitting and watch one of those Time/Life music collection infomercials. I went looking for some and found they wanted real money for them. I found this Motown Late 60's Collection for five bucks which seems to be about half Supremes and gave it a spin before leaving for work today.

Also, Lambchop - Is a Woman. This album nails my ass to the couch from the very first piano phrasings. There's nothing else like it.

I'd recommend this as a good album to check out if you're curious about avant/free jazz. This one isn't too challenging but offers exposure.

:smoke:

Then, for the commute, it was Snoop Dogg - Doggy Style. Which in my honest opinion is a modern classic that every serious music lover should have and know.

My wife is a Communications Prof. Her first assignment is having her students speak for 5 minutes about a work of art. Doggy Style is quite popular, both for the music and for the artwork. Excellent production on the CD, BTW.

That's very cool. And not surprising. I hope her students are able to view it in the larger societal context.

A few weeks into this and I can say that this list is comprehensive. I have manged to post everything I've listened to (for music anyway). Even if I only played one song (I'd let you know when that's the case)

Thanks Brett! I enjoyed following alone with you....but I know you got some Sonny Rollins, Aria and B-Tribe stashed away in there some place...no?

...slippers---

Yesterday's commute, it was Cab Calloway Mr. Hi De Ho 1930-1931; A CDr in the car that I made from this LP.

attachment.php

Then last night it was the haunting, sad ,and dare I say slightly trippy Gorecki-Symphony No.3: Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. This particual version is the best of the 3 or 4 versions I've heard. It's Naxos CD No. 8.550822. Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra/Antoni Wit with Zofia Kilanowicz, Soprano

I would recommend this to anyone who is into Pink Floyd or Radiohead; this is not your square uncle's classical music.

You know, I have some Sonny Rollins LPs in a collection I took in that I have yet to get to. Thanks for the reminder. And I've never heard of Aria and/or B-Tribe. I will certainly check them out.

And thanks for looking. It's nice to get the occasional reminder that this isn't totally a masturbatory practice here.

EDIT TO ADD:
Here's a fun one I haven't listened to in a while Carla Bley - I Hate to Sing

You've got to check out this track from this CD: Very Very Simple

Yesterday, I splurged and bought the rare brand-new/sealed CD..two actually. I got Neil Young's Massey Hall concert and the reissued HDCD of After the Gold Rush.

When I got home, I sat and listened to the first half of Massey Hall.
attachment.php

This morning, it was all of After the Gold Rush

attachment.php

Then the commute was full of The Mothers - Just Another Band From L.A. which I started after Billy the Mountain.

So far today, all I've listened to has been Marianne Faithfull - Blazing Away. This is an excellent live concert recorded in a church in Brooklyn in 1989. Members of her backing band include Dr, John, Garth Hudson and Mark Ribot. This has excellent versions of "Sister Morphine" a tune written by the glimmer twins with words by Ms Faithfull herself. It also has very moving versions of Tom Waits' - Heavy Weather and John Lennon's - Working Class Hero. You really ought to check it out.
attachment.php

I'm about to leave for work, if I listen to anything on my commute, I'll revise this posting later.

Peace out.
