Bulk Erasing and metal reels?

I have some 10.5" size reel tapes on aluminum reels that i need to bulk erase. Can I do it safely and effectively on the aluminum reels? Or, do I need to transfer the tape to a plastic reel first?

Aluminum reels do not have any (well not much anyway*) iron in them. Aluminum is not magnetic and the power of a bulk eraser will be enough to erase the tape on an aluminum reel.

* hard to prove it has absolutely no iron but not enough to have any magnetic properties.

I am using a Nortronics hand held bulk ersaer, not one of those table top models like the Teac. I guess that does not make a difference

One thing I would be concerned about with aluminium reels is that, as you move the eraser around them, you will probably scratch the finish.

Remember to turn the reels over and do the other side as well. Especially with a hand held demagnetizer. The table top ones are supposed to be stronger, but I still turn my reels over.

That is why i applied adhesive felt to the bottom of my demagnetizer. Works just fine and no scratches or loud rattling noise now.

All sorts of good advice here. Thanks. I guess I won't need to off load and reload my Sony plastic reels.

Question...been looking for the 10.5 spindle adapter for my TEAC E2 bulk eraser. Any suggestions? Also, any alternatives to this particular adapter? Thanks!
