Has anyone here paired an MC240 with a C33? Any thoughts on compatibility, synergy?

C33 is a great preamp. One of the classics among the classics. The 240 has no shortage of admirers either. Can't come up with any reason why you shouldn't do it. .You are doing the reverse of what I did, I have a Tube pre amp with a solid state power amp. It would be interesting to hear a system thats the other way around. is it an original MC240 or one of the newer ones?

Depends on which speakers are using. If they are very efficient then I would use the twin input and set them to about 11:00 as a start. Mac recommends playing a source you normally listen, too with the preamp vol control set at 12:00 and then advance the Twin level controls to a level just slightly louder than you normally use. I would then put the preamp in the mono mode and turn down which ever channel a bit if the image between the speakers is not centered. With a C-33 having a precision volume control you woun't have to worry about mis-tracking any more. I do find with my line arrays that a lot of recordings are mis balanced whther digital or analog so finding you have to use the balance control will be a common occurrence. I love the graphic tone controls especially with older LP's where the mastering engineer over emphasized the mid bass to make up for lack of low bass. Mcintosh speakers will reveal if an LP has vinyl rumble, which older Lp's seem to exhibit quite often. Then you can use your rumble filter or your 30 HZ control to minimize the issue. C-33 is a great piece and is very flexible and has features modern pre-amps should have. The only thing it really lacks is a moving coil input. I use a MP-100 feeding a spare line input with my older Mac Pre-amp.
