Can't get my sound right.

I also have a tf scale, but it did not come with a battery, so I have to find a battery for it and im thinking they are going to actually cost more than the $15 i spent on the scale. lol.

I honestly think it's a VTF issue, since you mentioned it sounded fine when put away. I've owned TT's that claim 1.3 or 1.5g's, but the scale told me different (off by a gram or more on many occasions). Hope you get it straight!
 
What part of Ohio do you live in? Wooster Vintage Audio in Wooster or Akron can check the stylus and align it for you. Brian's a great guy, and his turntable tech is top notch.

I am in Canton, and work in Akron. Wooster is about a 30 min drive. I haven't heard of them before. Perhaps I will give him a call tomorrow.

You have a nice rig and it's far better than anything new you could get in the $500 range.Go for the AT and get the discount. This should improve your sound a fair bit.
 
Seems like the point was already hammered home, but just in case: Don’t replace the whole turntable!
 
Before buying a new cart and needle. I'd try and clean the stylus first, if it sounded nice when u put it away it could of picked up some crap on it. It happened to me. I used a little iso alcohol on a cotton swab and gently touched the stylus. A nice little black piece of dirt came off and it sounded great again.

The last part of the equation is the phono preamp. Your receiver is getting pretty long in the tooth. Has it been restored or re-capped? Sometimes the phono stage is the first thing to go south. Can you try it on another receiver?

I previously had it hooked up to a Philips stereo receiver, can't remember the model. Through the speakers, it had no presence from that receiver as well. That was with different speakers, which I also used to the same effect with the Sansui. Those speakers sounded the same through either receiver to me, though I didn't play them back to back. Those old speakers are just some things I cobbled together, and sound harsh regardless. Maybe tonight I will try the Polks with the Philips and see if it sounds any different than the Sansui.
 
You're absolutely sure that you're plugged into the phono inputs on the Sansui. My apologies if this is a dumb question.

Yes, into Phono 1. I am actually thinking I will plug into Phono 2 tonight and see if that makes any difference.
 
If you can have a look at the stylus, gently push on the cantilever towards the diamond end with a toothpick and see if the cantilever moves easily/with resistance/at all. I still think the suspension has gone hard on it and your cantilever isn't able to move as it should.

Also, a few pictures of the cartridge/stylus might help your cause here too, folks could see what is or isn't looking right.
