Canton Speaker Capacitor and Coil Reference Thread

Hi guys, I want to share my results.

I have Canton GLE100 speakers and they were too agresive on hights.

So I have decided to change capacitors in the crossover.

My results of old capacitors are:
10uF film capacitors were OK...not changed
Canton 2379 - should have 15uF - 18,80 uF and 19,39 uF
Canton 3384 - should have 33uF - !!!! 53,39 uF !!!! and 47,52 uF
Canton 2800 - should have 56uF - 63,05 uF and 74,95 uF

Changed to Monacor MKT film capacitors. Sound changed asap...

Opened up my Ergo passiv this day.
There seems to be a extra board on the crossover.
Anybody seen this before?
I think it's a protection circuit?
 
Mine doesn't have that. Definitely looks like a protection circuit to me.

Also, my Ergo Passiv crossover only has 4 caps and 2 resistors (see post #210).
The circuit board looks similar to the one that was also temporarily used in the ct1000. Unfortunately, I lack a schematic for it, otherwise I could write more about it. But I suspect a protection circuit for the tweeter.

Did canton use same crossovers for different speakers?
I see @willie-aspen 's also have the ct1000 markings on it.

In my opinion canton changed some crossovers every 12 months. This little circuit was obviously used in several crossovers. Some coils and capacitors were surely used in several crossoovers, too. But I did not remember canton using the same crossover for seceral speakers.
 
Hello,

I would like to share my experience with CANTON LE 170 speakers that I have for certain time. Even they are quite Hi-Fi entry class, they have certain sound qualities, live and dynamic style that I really like.

However, sound of original speakers was in terms of rendered space limited, it was more like decent left and right channel and nothing else. Mids were also more backward then I would like to listen with a little boomy bass.

So I started with experimenting. When I opened the box, it was clear that drivers are made well and 2nd order crossover is good standard, but all caps were just simple elco bipolar types. I decided to recap all bipolars to MKP. For bass and mid/bass (speakers are 2,5 way) I used Bennic XPP and for the tweeter I tried three types: Audiophiler MKP Kondensotor, Monacor MKPA, Clarity Cap CSA.

I can say that recap from elco to MKP for the tweeter had most influence on the quality of sound – some 70%. Then some 20% when I made recap for mid/bass and remaining 10% for bass.

With Audiophiler MKP Kondensotor the sound is on warmer side, top heights with scintillating effects, a little grainy than smooth, forwarded sound that it was like singer voice is generated 1 meter in front of speakers, with beautiful space. The first feeling was that it sounds more like using tube amplifier instead of my class AB Onkyo.

With Monacor MKPA the sound was very neutral, with nice balance between grainy and smoothness, nothing forwarded – soundscape “behind” the speakers, it was almost perfect but the space was not so wide as with Audiophiler.

Finally, I tried Clarity Cap CSA and that is the winner. The sound with this MKP is perfectly balanced between grainy and smoothness, neutral with a hint of warm, only a little forwarded with 90% soundscape behind the speakers, no scintillating effects – everything natural, with beautifully rendered space.

The mids and bass with Bennic XPP are presented with more details and correct levels, better controlled and natural with more space when compared to the original Canton bipolars, where I noticed also some distortion in the sound and it disappeared with new MKPs.

Summary: This capacitors change moved sound of LE 170 up to the different league that is even several times more expensive. It was also interesting to hear influence of each partial upgrade on the overall sound.LE170_recap.jpg

Hi guys, just finish re-built of crossover for Karat 300 :-)

mythical 2102 i choose 10 uF :)

with new crossover - i think sound is really more clear. trebbles are really great.. my friend have same old karat 300 so next year we will make side by side compare :-)

The Canton Quinto 540 loudspeakers were produced between the GLE 100 and the CT800. From the GLE100, it got the 31 cm bass speaker and the midrange driver as a dome speaker. The CT800 only had a 26 cm bass speaker and a cone midrange speaker. Because of the latter, the crossover frequency in the crossover could be lowered from 800Hz to 450Hz.
(Data partly from hifi-wiki.de). Some people claim that this happened because the dome midrange drivers had difficulties radiating frequencies below 1.5kHz. I don't know for sure, but this allowed the power handling of the entire speaker to be increased, although the bass speaker became smaller.
That's why the crossover was also changed considerably.

Hi Guys,
If you replace all the electrolytic capacitors, you can also replace the resistors. This is not necessary. I already had a really burnt crossover from a ct90, but the resistors on it still worked. But something like that looks unattractive.

I will often replace the square block ceramic wire wound resistors with 10w Mills or Ohmite Gold non-inductive wirewound types.

block ceramic wire wound resistors are certainly better in their electrical properties.
Canton developed the crossovers back then with the less good resistors and took the indicative characteristics into account.
But everyone as he likes and the feeling listens!
