There is nothing I have done to have put them in danger, I am still well under max power ratings and the preamp in line before the amplifier, the volume on it is usually at either 9 o’clock position or half volume. Then the main volume of the music app is usually set about a tenth of its volume potential. This stereo has never seen the volume go past half volume.

It's not about being "under the max power rating".

You can destroy a speaker rated to handle 1000 watts with a 10 watt amp driven to clipping; conversley, I have driven speakers rated for 50 watts with 400 watt amplifiers without issue.

When an amp runs out of headroom and begins to clip your speakers are in danger no matter what they are "rated".

Ok- let me put it this way then- I DO NOT run them anywhere near loud enough , to get anywhere near clipping. This is actually getting to be fairly damn funny, when I first posted about these speakers- everyone was constantly stating needs lots of power. Now I do that and I am messing up? The speakers I are in a tattoo shop lobby. They are used for music through the day- which means basically background noise- just loud enough that conversation can still be had and not bothered by the music. I am sure they will be just fine. Seeing as I also stated above they were hooked up to the higher power amp for a portion of a day and that was it.

I don’t really get to listen to music at home. Things dont work out that way- I have a marantz stereo in my bedroom with KLH model 6 speakers and a stereo in the living room with nova 9s. But no one at my home listens to music at all- so I listen to the good stuff at the tattoo shop.

I had my original Carver Amazing Loudspeakers hooked up to a 1000 W per channel Carver CTS 2000. That was the best they ever sounded. The really came alive with the bigger power amplifier. Very fast and accurate bass. They were clean and coherent at any volume.

That’s what I am starting to find very funny. When first mentioning these speakers many people said they are power hungry and need upwards of 600 watts to wake them up. I do that, then the replies are now ohhh you will fry them…

That advice comes from experience. Yes, it takes power to wake them up and yes, that power will kill them as well.

All the money went into the ribbons, but they are extremely fragile. They are also easily affected by humidity. The quality of the woofers, crossover components, wiring, binding posts and panels is very poor.

I don't recall anyone telling you not to use the more powerful amp, just to be careful not to overdrive ANY amplifier as the ribbons do not tolerate clipping.

as they are used daily, the only audible part of the speaker is the ribbon tweeters. The woofers might as well not be there. The stereo- once again, as stated many times in many posts of mine here- has never been turned past half volume- clipping isn’t something done on this system. It’s inside a business.

Part of the performance issues are the placement. They are too high up on those cabinets and there is way too much open space behind them. The open baffle woofers need wall reinforcement.

Yes, I understand that too. These are extra speakers I have at the shop- needed a place to put them out of the way. Have had them listed for sale for months now, they are not going to be permanent here.

So, I've been to the shop, and I've heard the Carvers in question. I've no doubt they're well looked after! And the quality of the ancillary gear is in keeping with the quality of the speakers. Don't know if they're actually amazing, but they really do sound pretty good! No, I didn't get to see the woofers move, but I was only there for a few minutes. I'm sure I'll be back! It may be a tat shop, but it's also a vintage audio candy store, with some interesting newer stuff thrown in! And a few pieces of Schiit.

When the two pair of kilipschorns were in the shop- a 50 watt solid state amp- powered them loud enough to be heard down the street pretty far and be heard very clearly what was playing.

Download the Spectroid app. In addition to having a killer spectrum analyzer, it also has a pretty decent SPL meter. That way you can have some usable data to work from when making determinations or observations in a scenario such as this. Also helps others better understand what's going on so they don't overreact or can alert you when you are truly courting disaster.
