Download the Spectroid app. In addition to having a killer spectrum analyzer, it also has a pretty decent SPL meter. That way you can have some usable data to work from when making determinations or observations in a scenario such as this. Also helps others better understand what's going on so they don't overreact or can alert you when you are truly courting disaster.
Never used any programs to “test “ before. Either I like the way it sounds or I don’t like it, is how I have always done it. How does this work?

It's not just about testing...but having some objective data to work with as a tool or reference. For example...when you did the amp swap, you could've gotten some measurements before and after that would have given you a noise level value (SPL) at any given volume setting on the preamp. That way you have a quantified numerical reference before and after that provides more useful/usable info than just "the woofers really started jumping". Also, if you told us something like "SPL peaks are 98 db when ten feet from the speakers" or "SPL.peaks are 98db when twenty feet from the speakers", that tells us more about how hard your driving them and might prevent some from going into "mother mode". ;)
Think of it like this...you swap cam and heads on your small block Chevy and tell your friends after "it's making a TON more power!". Sure, that's something but not a lot to work with. Throw it on the dyno before and after the heads and cam or take it to the track and lay down some before and after ET's and THEN everybody has some useful data to work with.

I use the “ can hear it outside, can hear it across the street, can hear it down the block analogy”! Hahaha- had a few stereos setups that could clearly be heard several blocks away.

Like I said, the more useful data you give, the less likely you are to have others overreacting...which you apparently took issie with. We're all just trying to help. Do what you want. It's your time and money.

I did not say I wouldn’t use it- just saying what I have always done up til now.
 
Looks like Android only, but there are plenty of different spectrum analyzer apps to choose from and surely several that are compatible with iOS.
SPL and spectrum analyzer apps are most likely more accurate with iOS than Android. While there are a lot of manufacturers using hardware that varies from brand to brand with Android phones all Apple phones are pretty much the same.

As an Android phone and tablet owner I see a lot of variation, sometimes as much as 10dB for SPL measurements.

I did that just yesterday while the wife was in the shower!
I live in the jungle and my neighbors aren't close enough to bother but the house was jumpin.
 
I do that all the time, my system is on 24/7, for showers, or her outdoor chores, or whenever an unexpected opportunity presents itself.

as they are used daily, the only audible part of the speaker is the ribbon tweeters. The woofers might as well not be there. The stereo- once again, as stated many times in many posts of mine here- has never been turned past half volume- clipping isn’t something done on this system. It’s inside a business.
This is in a business right? I might recommend getting two top end 1000w amplifiers, one for each side. Then write it off as a business expense, heck ad a nice subwoofer if need be.

You can USE too much power but you can't HAVE too much power. It's often easier to fry a speaker with too little power than too much. Never know when you might be hanging out after hours and get an itch to explore the upper ends of your speakers, obviously the bass is a big part of that experience and to pull that out of those speakers you're going to need some power. Don't short yourself that power if you can help it

I know of no other way to add an app to my phone or tablet. :biggrin:

This doesn't bother me. +90% of my phone use is calls and texts. For me the screens are not larger enough to do much of anything else. Besides, I have a portable player for music on the go.

You can buy calibrated SPL measuring microphones for very reasonable money. When I want to use actual measurements to adjust my DSP I use a calibrated mic, a laptop and REW (Room Equalization Wizard).

REW is a free download. The mic I use is sold under several different brand names. Among them are Mini DSP, Behringer and Parts Express. Each mic comes with an individual eq curve (loaded into REW) that results in flat response from 20Hz to 20KHz.

I was referring to a phone instead of on my Mac computer- because it has no mic is what I meant.
 
All iPhones have a mic. AFAIK Mac computers have an analog mic input (combo earphone and mic jack).

If you have an iPhone the SPL and spectrum analyzer apps are likely relatively accurate.

I listened to them today with a higher power amp- played dance, jazz, rock and some metal- holy hell these things sound INCREDIBLE!!!! By themselves they fill my room 13x55’ with sound that is amazing!

Which amplifier? They can definitely impress.
 
Powered mine with a TFM-55(380wpc) and was quite happy.

As I said before, probably the most accurately named piece of audio equipment I have ever owned: "Amazing".

Set them up right and give them some room to breathe, sit back and enjoy !!!
