Cassette Tapes...making a comeback.

A good well set up cassette deck using appropriate noise reduction on a Chrom or a metal tape can sound excellent and there are people who are into the looks and technology....it is a slow revival but it is there .

I really don't think that there will be a revival, but it is an interesting technology, which I think it just plain cool looking. My husband thinks I'm nuts because I have three tape decks in my system ;)

I agree. There is no way, absolutely NO WAY the cassette will become mainstream again. I just don't see the masses going back to it (myself included). The reason some start up companies are turning a profit is because the small demand currently outweighs the supply. Nobody is making tape anymore.

It's simply a nostalgia / novelty thing.

I so agree, it is nostalgia - 100% Yet, there is something very comforting to me about the cassette. I don't even remember them in their prime at all. Listening to my Marantz or Tascam, it is to me just how listening to music should be - not some generic LCD display. I'm not sure if this makes any sense at all, but that is the way it is for me. What I really enjoy is recording off of a digital source onto a quality chrome or metal tape. The little bit of tape hiss, and the warmer sound. I just really enjoy it :)

I still browse Ebay looking for deals on tapes. My favorite is the TDK SA-X, which I buy when I can get my hands on them at a reasonable price. The same goes with the Denon HD-8 and Maxell MA-S. I stay far away from any of the Scotch brand tapes because I have never had any luck with them.

Lol, I don't think you're nuts - I have three in mine :)
Heee heee!!! At least there is someone!!! :D

I currently have a Technics BX606, a Marantz SD57, and a Tascam 130. I am probably going to be selling the Marantz soon (complete with the manual and remote control). My husband got me the Tascam as a present. It is probably the best one of the lot. Very low hours, and not a dent or scratch on it. :)

I'm not familiar with the Yamaha, but those Aiwas are really nice :D I used to have a Yamaha a couple of years back... can't remember exactly what it was, a KX-530 or K-530. It too was nice, but that is when I bought the Marantz because I was thinking about encoding everything with Dolby S. That didn't happen, so I stuck with Dolby C instead. Of my three decks, I think the Marantz probably has the warmest (if not most accurate) sound. :)

Electronic storage, especially within the computer industry has a very bad habit of going away. I imagine thumb drives will be replaced by clouds and clouds will be replaced by???
Media formats come and go, file formats effectively do not. I have .wav files of my band playing in the early 1980s, which over time have moved from cassette to an assortment of hard drives to their current residence on multiple hard drives and cloud storage. When .wav files are no longer current, I'll convert the files to whatever lossless format is popular at the time. The original cassettes are long gone, along with some of the original hard drives, but there are now more copies of the original content than ever before in more safe places, and as digital files I can copy them forever without the slightest degradation.

Agreed. What evolves is only the way(s) in which to house the files. To faster, smaller and less expensive means.

While my music server is disk based, I have copies of my 900 album library on individual flash drives.

Not exactly the way I would want to see one of my decks ;) I have to figure out how to replace the belts on the Marantz as I think they are getting a bit worn....

I have 3 decks ( that could have been a nasty typo)also. Teac C-3,A&D Gx-z9100 and a Integra TA-2070.

I used to have a TA-2070 a while back. I loved that deck :D Unfortunately, one day, one of the channels just went out completely and I didn't have the money to get it fixed :( So I sold it "as-is" on Ebay.

Too bad, that's a really nice deck.Hope ya got some decent moo-la for it.

Equipment wise this seems to be the time to buy decks my local GW has been getting in quite a few decks. The best so far was a Denon 3 head deck for 20.00$ a steal if your still into tapes which I'm not.

K720 is a nice deck. I remember when Yamaha came out with the K700, it's predecessor. The first really really good deck they made.
