I listen to cassette's quite often, I have many concert recordings. My brother recorded many himself. A lot of trading of bootlegs way back when. Mostly early 70's concert tapes. They still sound amazing, whether I play them in the car or at home.I actually just gave my buddy a suitcase full of these cassettes, so he could listen on his Marantz 5220 deck.

Can't believe I'm listening to a new cassette (Iron & Wine) ...and it sounds good! I may buy some more now.

Here's mine, doesnt sound quite right though all the belts work fine including the counter.....

If Its just running too slow or fast there is an adjustment trimmer thats easy to get to with the top off. The 5220 I gave to my son had issues with not sounding right after replacing the belts. Even after a lube job. Adjusting the speed fixed it.
Thanks, seems as the sound is kinda "muffled" so to speak. I used a tape demagnetize casette and no help. And of course, I haven't used it in close to 3 years. If I could find a tech I'd send it to him....AL

I'm sure you already tried this, if not turn off the Dolby NR and try a few different tapes.
which is where I found out these things existed in the first place.
It actually works OK, had to turn the volume down a bit to not overdrive the tape deck but its an acceptable source for a stock 1980s car stereo.
Almost sounds like dirty heads...rubbing alcohol & Q-tips may bring things around. If the head azimuth is off, either round up an alignment tape or have someone record a test tape on a known good deck to use for azimuth adjustment. And, a mono recording can often make the process easier.
I have my cassettes from when I was a kid and like playing them. I've been picking up others of late. Music I don't have on LPs, etc.
A Marantz SD 3000 is what I use in my Marantz system. Not TOTL, but it works.
Recently I found an SD 800 for my workshop. Changed the belts, was working fine. I took off the cover to shine the faceplate, switches, etc. up and when I put the cover back on and fired it up there's a huge hum and the left meter pegs. That sucked.

I used to record cassettes off record albums to either play in my car or barrowed albums from friends. Great fun. I liked using TDK tapes. I still have quite a few recordings stored away, along with a TEAC dual 3 head deck. Plan on pulling it all out and setting up with the rest of my vintage gear in a new listening room im putting together out in the barn. The deck needs new belts though. Hope thats all that's wrong with it. It looks pristine. Have always kept in it's original box since putting it into storage.
