Anyone have suggestions on the best way to catalog my collection of vinyl and what information should be included. Thanks

I use the tool at Discogs. Works perfectly.

+1 for Discogs. Many releases are in there already (so you can just "add to collection"), and it's not hard to add new items using their template. Crowdsourcing is the way to go for databases like this!

+1 for discogs. Plus the phone app comes in handy when I am on the road. I can reference my collection and condition so I don't double up.

Discogs for me also. I like the way I can access it on my smartphone when I'm in a thrift shop, see if I already have something. It's sometimes inaccurate and sometimes a pain to add new releases, but it works pretty well in general, I think.

You mean you don't have your collection memorized? ;-)

It reminds me of my mother, who was a child of the Depression. For some reason, canned asparagus was a real treat to her. She'd go grocery shopping, couldn't remember if she had any, and buy another can of asparagus. When she died, we found over a dozen cans of asparagus, some so old that the liquid had rusted through the can!

I too think Discogs is the way to go. It has helped me identify the issues of some of the records in my collection. I'm only a few records in to adding my 4,000+ collection.

Apparently not, I keep bringing home copies of Billy Joel's "52nd Street," thinking I don't have it yet. :D

Thanks for doing that for me. It reduces the temptation, me not being a Billy Joel fan and having none I don't get curious about what the hype is about.

But for a similar reason I think I ended up with at least 3 copies of Jesus Christ Superstar. :scratch2:

Anyway, I use CATraxx. http://www.catraxx.com/

I think I will try Discogs at some point to compare though.

Discogs here as well. It is a pain to do inititally but it's a great way to keep track of things.

Discogs here also. Easy enough to use at home or mobile. I have a couple of LPs that I have added there, not finding the specific release listed in their database--felt kind of good that I had some rarities. Also, you might consider using the Discogs info for insurance valuation, now that they have pricing information.

Instead of Discogs, I use a template for Bento on my iPad. I organize it by artist, title, label, year, cover condition, vinyl condition, etc.

I use Discogs. I enjoy finding the release and adding it to my collection.

However, lately I have been considering weeding out my collection of junk/trashed LP's but I keep putting it off because I don't feel like going through and removing them from Discogs..

+1 more for Discogs. Their database is pretty vast and I enjoy the wantlist feature with notifications. I've bought some records via discogs as well which was a pleasurable experience.

I also use the Crate Digger iOS app to access my collection on the go.

Music Collector by Collectorz.com. They also have a mobile app that you can synch with your desktop. Nice having your database with you when you're record shopping.

That's a really good point!

I'm trying DataCrow..

http://www.datacrow.net/

Because I want something that can work completely offline and portable if required.

I'm going to check Discogs.. didn't know they have a catalog function because I've never looked at the home page.. :-)

all these databases can be downloaded & saved on your equipment, right ? I'm not a big fan of "the cloud". You never know when todays free cloud will start charging you for your data............... Its my paranoia & I embrace it.
