cats and audio

I love birds, so by definition I hate cats. Unlike dogs, domestication of cats has not diminshed their hunting instinct. Even when provided plenty of easy-to-access food at home, given the opportunity cats will still ruthlessly hunt even when they are not hungry, which spells doom for many a backyard bird.

I've also had to endure their stench from spraying my cars or pooping in my landscaping more times than I care to count. And to top it all off, both my wife and my son are allergic to cats, so no way will there ever be one around here.

I have three cats, all male and they never bother my stereo stuff. As a matter of fact when I start playing some music on the living room system they usually come in and hang out with me. They seem to enjoy it! They have never ripped up a speaker grill or chewed wires or anything like that.
Like a previous poster said the way to train cats not to bother things is with a squirt gun or spray bottle filled with water.
My cats are clean and do not smell up the house as they do their business outside. They go to the door when they want to go out.
I also have dogs too and they all get along together just fine. They even play together. They will chase each other around the living room and dining room. It's fun to watch them, the cats are smarter than the dogs, they will hide behind things and jump out at the dogs when they come running by.
I used to not like cats either untill we got one that was abandoned when it's owners moved out of the neighborhood. Cats are loyal and can be trained, it just takes time and patience.
I know one thing our cats are good for, they do find and kill mice they find outside. I'd rather have that, then the little vermin getting into the house and chewing up stuff! I worked for about 12 years as an appliance tech and have seen 1st hand how destructive mice can be! They love to chew wires and use insulation in appliances to make their nests.
All my cats and dogs were either abandoned or came from people who couldn't keep them or didn't want them anymore.(I hate to see an animal go to the pound!) But now they have a second chance and are loved and well taken care of.

they aren't loyle like a dog.

Had a big old chocolate lab peacefully living out his last days.

Some friends brought over their new dog, a 6 mo. old Border Collie. This dog suffered from the hyperactivity syndrome all BCs seem to and was absolutely determined to play with our old guy who wanted nothing to do with the black and white maniac. We were all out sitting on the back lawn and our Lab came and sat beside me for protection. One of our cats, a gentle long hair orange who had grown up with the lab saw what was going on and came on the run. He charged the Collie and put the run on it then walked a perimeter around us staying between the two dogs and keeping the Collie at a distance of about 25 feet from our dog. Collie circled us for over an hour, cat stayed between the whole time.

No loyalty?

I can go on and on just like everyone else here has, but until you live with a cat, and it has put it's trust in you, you'll never understand. Living with a cat, and being around a cat are two completely different things.

My wife has completely changed her mind about cats since we got the one we have. She said it seems to be more like a dog than all the dogs she's ever had. It's by far our bestest friend, and vice versa...

What are they good for? hhhmm.. keeping your belly warm when you take a nap on the couch.. or keeping your feet warm on a cold winters night... and lots of other cool stuff..

"BTW a child can do way more damage to audio gear that a dog of cat, and an ex-spouse can do more damage than all of the put together."

Uh yeah.....no kids....and ex spouses don't live with my present spouse and I. Love the Grandkids and have 1 responsible child who is very good with my Grandson...no problem. Have a Grandchild from irresponsible step daughter and that child has some limitations...no problem. It's all good.

Only damage I ever sustained with my gear was from a cat running up the front of the speaker grill...I didn't blame the cat after all it was his job to run and play...I just didn't get another one when he passed.

I have five cats that I dearly love.
All smart, sweet, and gentle!
We have a deal:
They don't chew on my stereo....and I won't chew on their cat toys.

i find it ironic that in searching for beauty and meaning thru music and keeping vintage gear running, that someone would really choose gear over an animal...

I love my gear, but If i needed to chose, the feline or canine rug rats would have priority.

During a Block Party, my neighbor's cat was exposed to high SPL's and the poor thing fainted --- Could have been all the drinks as well ???

My jazz cats love it when I play Chet Baker, Bill Evans, some classical, I haven't told them what they used to make strings out of. Sarah plays fetch with her toys, and opens doors, we have levers instead of knobs.

June will sit pretty much in her version of a sweet spot when she listens. I did have to put a little metal shelf above my pre amp to make sure she didn't sit on it. No chewed anything, in fact June will let me wash her with warm water.

We also bought one of those fancy vacuum cleaners. At times they can be velcro kitties, and catnip is an other whole bag of fun.

Sorry you don't get it.

We just got back from vacation, and the hosts had a 13 year old dog. We took her for walks and it was fun, she was sweet. Still missed my cats though.

The thing is, cats aren't domesticated. Cats live with us because it's a good deal for them and, I think, because they like us, but they aren't owned like a domestic animal is. The human-cat thing is really pretty much of an even trade; we give them food and affection, they pay us back by decorating the place, making a relaxing sound and being pleasant to touch.

Those who can't handle the idea that their cat is their equal (the cat has no problem with it), shouldn't have one.

The thing is, cats aren't domesticated.

How very true. Perhaps that's why I'm a bigger fan of less "common" pets. I do <3 my cat more than most anything else, but I prefer reptiles over dogs even.

Don't go knocking my obsessive compulsive dog though.

I can understand why some folks like cats but for me it's dogs all the way. This doesn't mean I dislike cats it's just that I prefer dogs.

You can wrestle with dogs (the larger variety), you can take them camping or on vacation. They're always ready for a good game of catch and they won't abandon you. Dogs are emotionally needy just like humans so we work well together.

There's an old saying that goes: A dog says: "You feed me, play with me and provide me shelter, YOU MUST BE GOD!" A cat says: "You feed me, play with me and provide me shelter, I MUST BE GOD!"

Cats are good animals and provide plenty of happiness but I prefer my canine friend to an animal that just shares the same residence.

It's funny, I like people and animals much better than anything mechanical.
Yet I have no pets and gobs of Hi-Fi equipment ???

In my oppinion cats and audio don't mix,I saw another reciver today at the good will store choked with cat hair and cat dander the little XXXX must have slept on it because it was warm,They chew audio cables, claw speaker grills and can spray on your records too. I caught a cat clawing the new top of my convertable when I was a very young man. And have never met a cat I didn't dislike since.

what is your bad kitty story?

Do you think cat's have any value at all?

If so what is the virtue in a house cat?

They will torture and kill any smaller thing they find just for the fun of it they don't kill because they are hungry cats kill for sport alone.

they aren't loyle like a dog.
