Coffee

I love coffee and over the years have tried every type of brewing system. I like the little two piece pot on the stove to make espresso. But the coffee I enjoy and drink every day comes out of my Kurig. Green mountain Dark Magic. I do not care for flavoring in my coffee only real heavy cream and good Ol' fashion sugar. I do also enjoy Starbucks cappuccino just coffee and froth no fancy trendy goofy name flavors just coffee and froth.

The first coffee I have bought at Costco that I actually like:

I've not tried that particular one but the others I've had from Costo have, IMO, been roasted darker than advertised. Which, if one likes dark roast is fine and all. But, if I buy a light or medium I don't want something akin to a French roast level.

Asking too much for a pic of the beans?

Roasting 3 half pound batches of direct trade Guatemala Huehuetenango SHB today.

I made this attachment today to use my dust extractor to cool the beans in a fraction of the time.

That's an interesting approach.

I've seen the box with a hole cut out & shop vac setup, where you set a wire mesh strainer/colander into the hole and draw air through the beans. Had not previously seen an attachment to go on the Behmor itself.

I'm still using the dump'em hot and pour them back and forth between mesh strainers approach. Usually on the porch where a gentle breeze helps carry away the chaff too.

When I roasted coffee with a modified popcorn popper I used a strainer set in a box with a 4” hose to my 2hp dust collector. Overkill perhaps, but it only took a 1/2 a minute. :) Besides cooling the beans this attachment pulls air through the machine cooling it much faster so it’s ready for the next batch much sooner.

Experimenting with wife’s permission. Roasting under the kitchen hood and hitting the vacuum (outside) when the cooling starts. It’s really hard not to bake the beans when the ambient temperature in the garage is 50 or below. I got 8oz to 1st crack plus 2 minutes in 14 minutes total which is right on the line before baking starts

My time is more valuable to me than the taste of my coffee. I buy whatever tub of already ground up beans is the cheapest at the time I need it. It takes all of 30 seconds to get a pot going in the morning. End of story.

My GF/SO has been tolerant of roasting in the house. But, I expect that may change when (if, it seems at times) I get my garage/shop finished.

The smell certainly does linger.
Burnt chaff smoke smells like poop. It's nothing like the smell of coffee. The 1st batch was a success. The house doesn't stink!

Indeed. If one hasn't smelled coffee being roasted, FWIW, it's not a particularly pleasant smell. Nothing at all like the finished product.

I bought a percolator (used) at Savers yesterday.

It's a 12 cup Farberware, and needed a thorough cleaning, a run through with baking soda, and a follow up with white vinegar.

And a good going over with a scrub pad.....brought it right down to shiny stainless steel.

It works just fine, I have retired my Mr. Coffee.

Did I mention it only cost $2.28?.

First pot seemed a tad weak, next one I'll increase the amount of coffee.
