Coffee

Does white vinegar work on perc's?
IMHO, vinegar works better on units with aluminum guts. Some percs have stainless guts, the Dip It seems to be more effective on them. If using vinegar be sure to rinse several times, with a HOT salt water rinse in there too.

Ok, you coffee heads, here is a enhancement to even my simpleton Mr. Coffee making that if you try, I will be surprised if a improvement is not noticed by you..
After years of simple coffee making, mostly out of the tap water prep. and flushing the maker at intervals, I went with melting my fridge`s filtered ice maker for my simpleton morning coffee making..
Well, I was turned on to the Brita brand pitcher water into my coffee maker, and did this for around 5 yrs; with better results, after the coffee making water was pre filtered before the Fridge`s filter before being poured into the Brita pitcher, and then poured into the coffee maker(triple filtered ).
Well, a few month`s ago I was turned onto by my, non smoking housekeeper/care giver to a really better pure tasting water source for coffee making/drinking/consumption called: Zero..

I tried it for the past couple of months for coffee making, and it`s water is so pure, that I taste only coffee, and no other aftertaste.
And worth the additional effort to fill my pitcher with Britta`s filtered water from my twice filtered fridge`s water before even poured into the Britta`s pitcher..
And, I smoke cigarettes, so all my olfactory senses are supposed to be in the shitter !!

Just a thought/suggestion folks, based on my surprisingly unbiased experience !
The purer the water, the better the taste, especially the city water`s source..

Any cold brew fans ?
Almost all we drink in the house.
Brew overnight or longer.
Pour through a paper filter. We mix with hot filtered kettle water for hot cup of joe.
Love the flavor, and lower acidity.

I make some cold brew concentrate in the summer. Seldom drink it straight up though. Usually add some cream or half and half, and a shot or two of vanilla flavoring.

So I bought a Breville as it was well reviewed and had a nice array of features and adjustments. Even has a setting for the type of water you have and a litmus strip to make the determination. Problem is even if I pour a cup seconds after I brew a pot it’s only warm, not hot. Yes I know people “preheat” the carafe with hot tap water before they brew but at 4:30 I have neither the time or patience.

I’m probably going to return the machine and buy a Technivorm Moccamaster with a stainless carafe. Does anyone know if this machine makes a hot pot of coffee?

My previous Panasonic and Cuisinart made hot carafes.

Thanks

Eric

I'll let you know in a few days. I just ordered one last week but when it came in it was broken.
I got the smaller 32oz machine as I have limited counter space and only use this machine during the week for my travel mug. It should be the same as the larger machine just without the adjustable warming plate temperature.
I'm replacing a Bonavita that **** the bed after only about 1-1/2 years. That was a nice maker and supplied a nice hot coffee. I did like it but it started acting up lately so I figured I'd splurge on the Technivorm.

Well I took the technovorm back. Makes a good tasting mug of coffee but the crappy feel of the parts and the fact that the filter basket won’t sit up straight on the counter while you fill it and the model with the carafe has a cheap plastic piece to sit on the counter to catch drips but if you lift the machine ever so slightly to put it back under the counter it slips out.

Good maker just horrible industrial/ergonomic design. I would imagine the ones with the glass pitcher would avoid that last problem.

I exchanged it for the Kitchenaid vacuum coffee maker.

I’ll keep you all posted.

thanks

Eric

You folks post this so called wake up coffee. All green coffee has the same caffeine content, period. Darks roast are touted as having more caffeine than light. By weight they do only because a dark roast looses more moisture during roasting but not by much. Mabey 3-5% max.

I was of the understanding light roasts tend to have higher caffeine because the darker roast profile breaks down more of it. :dunno:

Have a light-roasted Mexican bean from Dogwood Coffee. Damn good but sure seems to have plenty of caffeine kick. Yowza... :yikes:

Hmmm. Interesting. Must have been something else then. I very seldom have dark roast coffee, preferring lighter and occasionally medium, but that Mexican sure seemed to pack a punch.

I always measure too. Starting batch is 55g beans to 1L water. Tweak from there.

I’m spoiled. We have a local(-ish) coffee shop in New Haven and all their beans are sourced by them and roasted by them on the other side of the river in Branford.

they have some SERIOUS coffee here at times. I took a picture of the white board one time because they had one that was over $60 a pound... they always gave a “feature” up so you can sample before you clean out your 401k on coffee. I always get the feature but their house blend is really nice. Smooth and flavorful with no bitterness or acidity. I can drink it black but prefer my coffee with steamed heavy cream.

At work I have a Keurig machine (because no one cleans anything) and I run Starbucks Pike in that. I get heavy cream at the local grocery store and that keeps me conscious until lunch.

I've paid $30+ per lb of green beans for some Hawaiians. They were very good, but I've had very good for a lot less too.

I like Folgers black silk, made strong, with half and half. Starbucks? I don't know what's so great, it's not awful, could be stronger. I use Cafe Bustelo in my espresso makers, but I haven't tried any others. The coffee with chicory and milk that they serve in and around New Orleans is pretty tasty IMHO.
