Cover versions better that the originals?

O.K,

Following that: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=149272, I though cover versions often get a bad rap, mostly for good reasons too (elevators and supermarkets don't allow for good accoustics...:D).

However, every once in a while, a cover version comes along sounding actually BETTER than the original (be it the recording or be it the interpretation).

The first one I think of is "Sweet Jane" by Lou Reed. do it better (for me).

Add to that almost every cover done by Brian Ferry.

"Up On The Roof" by Laura Nyro. I think The Drifters did it first, and I know it's become a standard, but Laura's version is sublime.

My vote?

I recently, erroneously credited Greg Allman with writing "these Days", originally performed by Nico. It was actually Jackson Browne who wrote it.

Thatout of the way...

Nico- These Days- performed/recorded 1967 on Chelsea Girl. Greg Allman- These Days- covered on 1973's Laid Back.

Of course it could be because I heard Buddy Holly's version before the original.
 
I'll second that about Cowboy Junkies cover of Sweet Jane.
They've done some amazing covers of other peoples stuff too.

IMO:
Proud Mary-Ike and tina Turner. MUCH better than CCR, IMHO

Eric Clapton singing I Shot the Sheriff by Bob Marley. I'm not sure which is better as I like them both very much.
 
I have a few faves, but the ones that come to mind right now are Beat Farmers covering Kenny Rogers' "Lucille", and Tool's brilliant cover of Zepplin's "No Quarter".
