Crossovers In Advent Minis

Are there any upgrades of the Advent Mini speaker crossovers that give a real improvement in sound?

An active crossover is a big investment to dial in Advent Minis. Maybe find a similar sized speaker with similar characteristics and buy a pair of those crossovers. Sometimes they can be really cheap. I needed crossovers for a pair of Polk RT800 towers a while ago. Used ones were $25-40 on the auction site. I called Polk and bought them brand new for $35...

I was looking for upgrades to the existing crossovers. I got several sets of the Minimus 7 upgrade kits on you-know-who-bay and they really do work wonders, at least to my tired old ears. Nowadays I won't give away a system with Minimus 7s until I upgrade. That's why I want to find out about an Advent Mini upgrade to go along with a re-foam job.

IMHO, that will rarely, if ever, work. The crossover networks are built for the particular drivers and cabs. They aren't one size fits all. Driver characteristics, crossover points, slopes/poles, etc., all may be different. I would also avoid the generic crossovers you can buy.

Best would be to rebuild the crossovers you have in them now.

IMHO, that will rarely, if ever, work. The crossover networks are built for the particular drivers and cabs. They aren't one size fits all. Driver characteristics, crossover points, slopes/poles, etc., all may be different. I would also avoid the generic crossovers you can buy.

Rebuilding the existing isnt an upgrade which is what he was shooting for... unless there is something really huge you can can do with the rebuild. And yes I understand that you are correct. . However there are levels of correct... and an advent mini isn't the epitomy of technological sophistication. i did sonething similar with a small and less expensive speaker and had good results.. BECAUSE... they aren't applying the same level of engineering to the minis that they are to a pair of Vandersteens.

The rationale is that companies cut corners and crossover upgrades address those faults. However, I also recognize the more someone spends on an item the less he's inclined to admit he's gotten the old boty-oh-doh-doh from some salesman. Like me about my car, for example.

There is a difference between using the network designed for the speakers in question and upgrading parts. My view is to keep the network and replace the parts. This past weekend I updated a relatively simple passive crossover. But a lot of research was needed beforehand on the old caps, ESR, DF, etc., to determine how to improve them without changing the original voicing for the worse. Just using better components in the network won't always make it sound better. Sound different, yes.

I found a pair of these in great shape for $6 while out thrifting. I gave my son a pair that I also found thrifting, and liked them so much, that I got this pair. They are crisp, fun to listen to for jazz and vocals. No, they will not thump, and no, I have no interest in the passive sub that yes, I know Advent made for them. Sometimes it's nice to listen to different genres with different speakers.
