Crown Amps, the hype is real!

About 7 years later the fan started coming on and going off so back to a local shop with great reviews. I was told the power caps were dying.

The low voltage suppy had drifted from its + and/or - 15 volts and this causes the problem you noted. Mine does this and every few years it is just a matter of tweaking the pot to get proper operation again. In fact, it is doing it now, and I need to get it out of the entertainment console to do it (PITA)!

When I had my Marantz in the shop, I noted this to the tech and he said if it is that unoften, just deox it and see how long it goes.

I don't usually run it louder than low 80's dB. irritates my tinitus.

Same problem. Sucks don't it? I have a pair of nice 100 watt mono tube amps hooked up at the moment and I can't wind it up otherwise I suffer for hours. One album side at "fun" volume is enough to keep me awake half the night.

I like pro amps. Some might opine I have a problem... LOL.

3) Crown CE4000
3) E-V 7100
2) QSC PLX3402
2) QSC PLX2402
2) Crown MT1200
1) QSC PL3.4
1) QSC PL236
1) Phase Linear A15
1) Rane MA-6S
1) Crown XLS1000
1) Yamaha P-2200

There may be a couple others but that's what comes to mind right off hand.

And, in case wondering, most of them are in a system.

The CE4000s, PL3.4, and PL236 in my garage system.

The PLX3402s and PLX2402s run the fronts, center, surround, and back speakers of the main HT/stereo.

Two E-V 7100 and XLS1000 actively biamp a pair of monitors and power the subs.

The MA-6S powers the speakers in a secondary HT/stereo.

The others currently sit idle.

Edit: Yup, at least one I forgot. Add Yamaha P-2200 to the list.

FYI, I'm hoping on the Hypex train. I just ordered the finished Audiophonics 252MP from France and managed to score a NC502MP module with wires off ebay. I will probably do a whole different review of that stuff, but I will update this to with Hypex v. Pro comparison. Thanks a lot to everybody who chimed in on this thread! I learned a lot!

The Crown XLi1500 is on sale at Amz

The same price I got it at over a yr ago

It looks like other customers were saying the default description says 220v, but when placing the order a 120v US unit gets shipped by default.

Today is the last day of the sale. I purchased one and will see what I receive.

I picked up an xls-2002 for sub work.

I love the crown's unlimited power but it is not in the same league as a decent home audio amp like a Yamaha mx-600/800/1000.

I've a/b compared the crown to quite a few linear power supply amps and it just isn't as sweet.

By the way, for sub work, I cannot think of a better amp than the crown. I suspect it would also do very well for mid-bass in a bi-amp situation, although I haven't tried it in that service.

If the XTi uses the same drivecore module, which I think it does, it will be an excellent amp but not quite in the same league as a top class A or even AB unit in upper range response.

If all I had was the XLS for full range, I'm confident I would be happy with it.

The XTi have DSP and SMPS but, unlike the XLS DriveCore amps, I believe they are conventional/linear output stage, not switching. If you get to the XTi 6000 I think then you are back to a switching amp but more along the lines of the higher model ITechs, not the XLS DriveCore.

Appears to be the 220v version.

Hope it is in fact 120v

I thought it was sorta odd

BTW -- In my judgement the XLi is an 'old fashion' amp. If thats good or bad , dunno :)
