CV D9 vs Infinity SM 152

I'm a classic rocker, so for the fun of it, say I wanted my tunes LOUD. I'm curious which speaker will pound harder and get louder--The Cerwin Vega D9or the Infinity SM 152. These models are singled out just because everywhere I look, they're touted as the biggest baddest speaker out there. So which one (or any other model) will recreate that Rush (or Led Zep) concert experience? This is sorta for fun, I like my hearing. :thmbsp:

So far my Cerwin Vega D9's rock out better then all my other speakers, I power them with my 110 watt per channel Concept 11.0 with a Bose 901 sitting on top of each D9 seperately powered by a S.A.E. A7 intergrated amp with the Bose EQ balancing the 901's, power up the D9's and then i add the 901's to compliment the sound, Rock ON!!!!:thmbsp:
 
Id go with the D-9s if you want loud punch look no further. Im NOT just saying that as a cv fan either. They can be found for pretty cheap too. Nothing rocks harder than CVs!! and they take very little to run nicely!
 
Infinity VS. Cerwin Vega

I cannot remember where I read it, but it was published that the Infinity SM-152s will reach a maximum S.P.L. of 123 dB, where the Cerwin Vega D-9s will reach 125 dB. I think they both have 1W/1M sensitivities of 102 dB, but the Infinity is rated at 300 watts, where the Cerwin Vega is rated at 350 watts. The Cerwin Vega AT-15s will reach 127 dB, and with a better-sounding dome tweeter. :yes:
 
the cabinet quality of most cerwin vegas is typically better than
sm series infinities . i have sm-90 ,sm-120 , and the cabs are simply glued up PB ,
with no bracing or even cleats .

the cv's i've been inside had cleats and bracing , pretty solid....
were tuned lower,better construction. sm's sound hollow when you rap on the cabs.
at high volumes my sm-120's cabs resonate wildly , smearing the bass .

infinitiy hi-output polycells sound better than c-v's tweeters i've heard , but the sm's
flimsy woofers are no match for the castframe cv's . sm's are tubby sounding , c-v's
are punchy . neither has a great mid . if you lowered the x-over to~ 250hz , added a proper
mid-bass w/subenclosure tube ,they might clean up nicely .

either would be perfect for a bar or frathouse or dj setup , playing rock or rap .

JBL? They made some monsters that would probably cause structural damage to most of the McHouses out there.
 
I've heard them both but not side by side. Both are very efficient and can move a lot of air. Which rocks harder, I cannot say. The SM-152 and D9 belonged to someone else so I couldn't do any torture tests. However, I have abused the SM-122, which has a 12 inch woofer. They could easily maintain 115 dB with an 85 wpc amp.
 
Prolly the CV's. But why? Neither are great speakers. So what you want are patio speakers for a pool party? Or do you want to FEEL the band and watch the plaster fall? If the latter, look elsewhere.

I have to say both infinity's and CVs have there disadvantages. Infinitys have better tweeter. CVs have better cabs and way better woogers. The OP wants speakers that hit hard for rush and classic rock bands like that and go loud. CV is just that. Rock is ALL i listen to and I still havent been impressed by anything else for that music. :music:

also, CVs are one of the ONLY speakers capable of property damage!:thmbsp:

BTW Im not bashing infinity at all. they are some nice speakers:music:

Woogers? Hahaha... just kidding!

I have two Infinity Polycell tweeters that I've used in custom boxes, and I have to say - the tweeters in the AT-15s blow their doors off. Clearer, louder, more detailed. The Polycells are nice, but don't measure up to the DT-5s. :no:
 
Was not talking about smaller Infinities with polycell tweets, although the RS X000 series with them can sound nice. I'm talking real big classic Infinities like these:

Specs, please...

That's all good, but we're talking about the SM-152s here. In any case, would you happen to know the specs on those tweeters?
 
In answer to a previous question, I want to feel the band and watch the plaster fall. No pool parties or bars here. Soooo...maybe it's time to look at the JBL L-200. :D And as far as big and bad, that's only an ebay reference. :thmbsp: I bet there's some Klipsch speakers that could crack some plaster too.

IMHO the Vegas have better bass (i.e. hit harder) while the Infinity's have a nicer mid-range. Mine are SM-155's BTW.
If I had a gun to my head and had to choose between the two I would pick the D-9's.
About the polycell tweeter, it can get harsh at times...so can the C.V. bullet horn tweeter. The good thing is that both sets of speakers have tone controls so you can adjust them for your room's acoustics and your listening preferences.
Are there better speakers out there? You bet, but for rocking out on a budget either set would be hard to pass up....
Or you can get them both, stack them like I did, turn it up to 11 and transport yourself front row center to a Led Zep concert.:D
