Other than the name absolutely nothing in common with the company founded by Jon Dahlquist. I believe the name was sold to a Canadian company. The surviving engineer from the original Dahlquist who had designed the DQ-20 and DQ-LP1 variable electronic crossover had already left to start his own speaker company(Alon).

So the DQ-20 design is really what the Alon's and now Nola are based on.

I sold my modded DQ-10's in 1978. I was into arena rock at the time and needed more bass. Koss CM-1030's.

I've got to admit I've never heard of the speakers mentioned in this thread.

I sent an email to Nola or Alon and got a response back that said that Carl Marchisotto designed the M-Series Line of Dahlquist speakers while he was still there.
The M-Series Dahlquist are very high quality speakers. The M-909's are now my Number One set of speakers.

Maybe a dumb question... why are the woofer cones all covered it what appears to be "goop"... Did they come that way?

Maybe one of the resident experts (Zilch where are you?) will chime in here, but I am going to guess that they were custom tuned and that goop (which appears to be rubber cement or something akin) was added to dampen or possibly for custom tuning the bass. :scratch2:

Okay, I just bought a pair at Value Village in Seattle. I didn't know anything except the name Dahlquist. The boxes are walnut, but a bit rough. The risers are pretty ugly but strong. I had to fork out $6.99 each! A great deal, but my wife will not be happy as the speakers are really pretty large and I already have picked up a significant bunch of equipment. I hope these sound good with my Carver "the Receiver" that I picked up at Value Village for $14.99!!! And it was functionally perfect too. Maybe I'll find some Orions out there next!

the pair I just bought are covered with some kind of resin. My dustcaps are smooth though. I think those have been crunched!

Mine are M-909. Like I said in another thread, I took my JBL's out to the garage and these are now my main bedroom speakers. The imaging is simply superb! I was used to horn tweets on that system, but the 909s are so smooth and transient, I don't think I want to go back. I think both 8" woofers are active, however earlier in the thread someone thought one was passive. I'll pull 'em and check tonight. I'm going to a buddy's to hear his Orions soon, he says I'll be ruined for anything else. Maybe I shouldn't go...

They are positively active. All the drivers are Vifa...If you can get them off the ground with some stands similar to the ones I have in the previous pic, you will notice an even greater improvement. What are you running them with. I just switched out my Pioneer SX-850 in favor of my Kenwood KA-9100 Integrated Amp and haven't looked back. A very, very nice setup in my opinion. :thmbsp:

Dahlquist M-909

Upon checking inside of one of the cabs, it turns out that both Vifa 8" woofers are wired into the crossover. I guess that means they're both active. I also included a (dark) pic of the Carver receiver. I have heard that these have heat issues with a couple of resistors near the top, so I retrofitted mine (two sided tape) with a AC fan and a piece of ducting to redirect the fan noise. I am still not happy with the whirring sound, but I'm working on it!

I found another pair at the GW. They have that same "goop" on the cones also. The other pair I had the cones were bare. So, I don't know what the story behind that stuff is.

Keep the goop on. If it's mass loading like on very old Infinities (they used Mortite) you will change the sound. Likely lose some bass extension.

The balance between higher frequencies and the bass is better. I am once again impressed by these things. These Vifa drivers can be purchased pretty inexpensively and the crossovers look pretty simple. I would build a pair if I didn't have these!

This is quite an old thread, so I may be reaching here, but I just found a set of these at a garage sale. I am really happy with them, but I wonder if I can find or make some decent speakers to complement these as surrounds. I listen to a lot of music in stereo, but the same room is my home theater, and I'd love to get a full setup if anyone has any opinions.

The M-series were designed by Carl Marchisotto. I have a pair of the M-903's. I enjoy mine and would love to find a pair of 909's.

Sorry about the delay. It's a 1" dome tweeter and an 8" woofer with an 8" passive.

It’s two 8” Vifa drivers, no passive. I hope you don’t own them.
