Data link between Mcintosh gear?

I have read the owners manuals a number of times for the Mcintosh components but I'm still not sure what the data links are used for. Any help in understanding the purpose of these links would be a ppreciated.

If you have a McIntosh preamp and a McIntosh CD player for example you could use the data link and your preamp remote will control the CD player so you will only need one remote instead of two. Also in this setup if you hit play on your preamp remote it will turn on the CD player.

If you have a MR85 tuner the preamp remote will control the MR85, the MR85 can not use a remote by itself.

Thanks for your reply. I use just one remote for my entire system (URC MX300) so I guess I wasn't missing anything with the data link not hooked up.
