Decision Time: To Upgrade OPTs for Maggie 9304-20 or Not!?! Help

A big part of understanding what you need is first understanding what you want to achieve.

How much power you need is (basically) a function of the peak volume/dBs you want to achieve, considering speaker sensitivity and listening distance.

Listening distance shouldn't be hard, and usually one can find some specs to get in the ballpark of what you're dealing with for speaker sensitivity.

The biggie is, what is the peak volume you want to play back?

100dB? 110dB? More? Less?

The beauty of those 7591/7868 tubes Jay mentioned is that they are as easy to drive as
EL84/6BQ5 so they can be subbed into the same circuit (usually much simpler) with just bigger
6-7K primary OPT's for a bit more power and very long life or of course a higher voltage
power transformer will give you the max of about 40W/CH. Higher voltage caps needed
also.
