Denon DP80 & DP75 Owner's Thread

But Voyd was an ultimate TT, and you'd pass? Its "failure" was undercapitalization and crazy price — 12,000 for what many saw as just a new variation on an old theme, when the tried and true LP12 was only 1,400.

I'd pass on the WT instead; did it really "redefine analog playback" just by hanging from a string? Redefined "pivot" maybe. You already said your also-new Sota Gen 6 Cosmos Eclipse will, um, eclipse it — and you also know an even more alluring siren will sing to you soon enough.

There was a Voyd for sale on USAudiomart last year, since I was unsure of parts availability and its condition was suspect I never seriously considered it.

I saw rhe Oracle reference, however I have been spending time in the hospital and rehab center as Mom fell and broke her hip last week. My sense of humor has temporarily gone AWOL.

I always found the Well Tempered interesting as it was a fresh take on how to spin a record. The Reference was the ultimate expression of that design, and so expensive that few were built. There is far more to the design than a string unipivot bearing. Achilles is the belt, OEM no longer available, and replacements sub par. But according to the current WT distributor a customer has bought the new on offered by LP Gear and achieved proper speed on a previous generation WT table.

So that is my rationale for considering it, but really I dont need it.

Sorry to hear about your mother! May the healing be brisk and successful.

Those top-of-the-line Well Tempered are quite something, actually. I was privileged to hear once once and it was exceptional.

Great cartridge choice. I love the mid compliance DL 103D and DL-305 series of cartridges
 
Thanks for the comments. My 'wood guy' works primarily in black walnut (though he will do what is requested) and knows his supplier well, so generally gets an excellent selection of grain/burl in his wood.

Has anyone bothered to rewire the power cord to something more 'modern'? I'm thinking about doing so.

Also, do you run a 120/100vac transformer with your DP80/75?

I run a 100v output transformer with my DP-80 as that is what it is designed for. The DP-75 is a 110/120v power supply.

My Denon DP-75 has voltage selector switch to 120-200-220-240 volt and 50-60 Hz too.

Yes......... have a 5A 120/100 step-down left over from using a Yamaha A-2000 (https://usa.yamaha.com/products/con.../hifi-history/integrated-amplifier/index.html) integrated many years back. Trying to decide if it would smart to run the 100vac thru some sort of higher freq filter to minimize the grunge (is that a musical term since Nirvana?) feeding thru. If/when I get around to recapping I'll likely think about putting in an IEC plug. I'm really not a fan of 'captured' power cords.

To answer my own question, got a PS Audio Noise Harvester. Figure $65 is cheap insurance compared to any power supply problems in my TT.

First let me say I'm highly impressed with the knowledge displayed by the forum members here, and what's even more impressive is the attitude of the individuals on this thread. Having researched many sites and threads, it's refreshing to find a thread with people who are generally kind and courteous to one another, without being condescending, or letting their knowledge turn into pure hubris.

You guys have some wonderful machines, thanks for sharing.

Let me introduce myself: I'm retired Army, however it's a combat disability retirement, was severely wounded in Iraq, so that cut my career a bit short. Living in the Texas Hill Country, just west of San Antonio. I'm generally homebound due to my injuries, but still do some handtool woodworking and some limited hunting.

That's probably more than you needed or wanted to know but with the overall anonymity of the internet, believe it's important to reveal a bit about one's self.

I'm getting back to a vintage turntable after a long hiatus, and just purchased a dp-75 in a 3700 plinth (still has the 305 tonearm), and as you probably already know the 305 has no anti skate adjustment. Also this
is the plinth that is drilled for the 305 or similar length tonearm.

Happy with the sound, it's playing though an old Denon Pre amp from the late 80's powered by a Threshold T50, via an Ortofon Blue.

My intent is to save up a few dollars and purchase a new tonearm in the future, but don't have a clue what to get, and I'm not looking to spend more than 1k, and would really like to keep it to about 1/2 that amount if possible.

With all that said: Recommendations for a tonearm that will fit in place of the 305, in other words without adding a plate or drilling a new hole?

Have the skills to add a tonearm plate, but don't want to go down that road if I don't have to.

Have read good things about a few of the Denon cartridges coupled with the 305, anyone with experience in that area?

Wellcome to AK Andy just to help people with a replacement arm without modification at least length wise
your 305 arm has a spindle to pivot distance of 230 mm.

I have a DA-401 for sale that is an exact fit. Same 230mm pivot to spindle distance. I have been using it with a DL-305 and Stanton 881S and 981LZS. I am only selling it because I am getting a Moerch tonearm. Had to spend a lot more than $1000 to better the 401. Message me if interested. I have it on Barter Town. I could give you a great deal on an 881S with original 81S stylus and the 401 if you need a cartridge also. I had needlestein, a retipper, who use to be a regular here inspect it with a microscope and he said it has very little wear.

Glad you like it. It may just be the picture angle but check that the distance from stylus tip to the back of cartridge is correct. It is in the manual. I think it was 48- 50mm. Looks a little forward in picture.
 
It’s the Ipad photo, and your close it’s 38mm by the manual, but thanks for noticing, I doubled checked just to be sure....
