Denon DP80 & DP75 Owner's Thread

Also the DP-75 is indistinguishable from the DP-80 by experienced listeners. Elimination of the DP-80 pitch control that would rarely be used by home consumers cut the cost. Also startup speed not needed in home setting. IMO the major feature that contributes to both the DP-75/80 performance is the split platter that they both share.
 
Il Denon DP 80 è un giradischi meraviglioso e sto finendo la sua ristrutturazione, senza fretta visto che ci sto lavorando da più di un anno. Ho completato la macchina, ora mi sto dedicando allo zoccolo e al braccio che dovrò montare.
 
I'm batting around the idea of making a custom plinth for a DP-80 build. Does anyone happen to know the thickness of the DK-300 plinths from Denon? Just looking for the thickness of the plinth itself, not including the dust cover. Also, I know the entire motor unit is 14cm tall...but does anyone know how "deep" the motor unit goes below the platter assembly and controls that sits atop the plinth? (ie, how deep would a plinth cutout need to be in order to house the entire assembly?).

Much appreciated to anyone who can help!

Hi, Thickness of plinth is about 6.7cm and subjective height till footer is 10.6cm as I am unsure if I had tighten it fully per photos

I had removed the 2x dp-80 and believe I cannot advise your required details but hope it somehow helps until someone else here can do so as it will be quite some time b4 I resume these projects.

Thanks and oops .. nothing too satisfying on the blue leds mod .. just blue ones to replace the red one per photo. Unfortunately, the plastic cover for the strobe light is red tinted and the blue leds modded strobe bulbs simply looks dimly red still ... I reverted back to stock strobe bulb :(

The piano black paint was not diy and it is automotive paint sprayed at my car body shop but it turned out fine .. he does refurbishment of pianos and speaker boxes. Shop had to putty and smoothen down the less than perfect 40 years old dk300 plinth which I believe is of high enough SQ quality without resorting to many expensive ones seen.

Richardioh I'd say it came out excellent and all in keeping with the original design from that era. More like 45 years old, if there is a couple tiny flaws I don't see them.

Hey Kit, Tks tks .. got lucky and glad with the spare pcb assemblies at ok $ to swap/fix initial issues but most glad on getting initial scare of corrosion on platter (and hinges) now nicely removed and ceramic coated to handle local tropical high humidity environment .. finger crossed. Cheers.

Richardloh the details re your plinth are very informative, besides the Denon there were other plinths to accommodate the DP-80, looks loke you put a lot of thought into it. My plinth is an early VPI designed for a number of Japanese direct drive motor units and tonearms, very substantial.

Hi Kit,

Nice vpi ! I bought the dk300 and dk200 plinths as I have no capability on woodwork .. even cutting out the slot of the plinths' underside to house the stepdown xformer was done by a nice Napalese carpenter.

I cannot say for the smaller dk200 but preferred flaux leather that does not get scratched or stained unlike spray painted and likeable more modern silver aluminium trims but the dk300 is a beast to cut and drilled thru with some broken blades and drill bits .. at also an substantial 14kg and seemingly so called laminated panzerholtz type that I believe cannot be bad.

Importantly, they are cheap from Japan and yet with needed dustcovers albeit expensive to be shipped out of Japan to me due to their weight. Inclusive of usd200/dk300 spray painting, wood work by Napalese carpenter locally, stepdown xformer, diy footers, armboard drilling/cutting to sme/microseiki by expert in germany etc. completed cost was about usd400 which I find ok.
