Did You?

Also SSNs etched into gear, not only audio, but on the backsides of (many) guitars I've handled over the years.

I bet, Definetly with the value of guitars.

Working on a pair of speakers now.
Driver's license number scribed on the back.

I've also seen a lot -- a LOT -- of DL Ns inscribed on all kinds of gear, audio and musical instruments & related (e.g., guitar amps), in addition to the SSNs.

^^ PS: I have also seen a fair N of guns, mainly handguns (autos and revolvers), which had inscribed into them SSN and/or DL numbers.

nb: Also have seen SSN and/or DL inscribed into a few knives, in particular "specialty" knives like custom-made knucked trench fighters and stuff made by Stone and Cole and even a few Gerber MK-II types.

I've never engraved or otherwise marked anything, but I've acquired quite a few things that a previous owner decided to mark, usually with their SSN.

Aside from audio gear & LPs, I've seen guns, bicycles, tools, even a skateboard marked up, usually engraved in the most obvious, value destroying location.

I think I marked a few pieces of gear with my drivers license number inside the piece(s).

I got sick of losing, then finding my tools in my firefighter brother's toolbox. Went to the local PD as they had an electric engraver to loan. The dispatcher took my name and jokingly told me to be sure to return it or he'd have to tell my brother whom he knew. He laughed when I told him that my brother stealing my tools was the reason I was engraving them.

"Rank" not only signed the cover and label but the SOB even etched the deadwax!

My sister's dorm floor left most of their records in the community lounge of that floor. The result was a lot of marked record trading. And borrowing to take home for the weekends and holidays.
Never a word of missing records.
I was 10-14, great bunch of ladies. Took me with them lots of places, we lived on the campus.
Dad was a prof.
