Do binding posts really affect sound quality?

I wonder if simply breaking and making connections, or reflowing soldered ones isn't responsible for much of any perceived improvement in sound.
Many, many times, the answer is yes. :thumbsup:

The argument that "practice makes perfect" can sometimes backfire. And things get subtly (or not so subtly) worse. Be sure to do mods that are easily reversible. I know this sounds logical, but in the audio (and car) world, you'd be surprised. ;)

All I know is the exact same audio set up sounds different in my workshop than it does in the dedicated, acoustically treated listening room. The room and placement of gear in the room is the only difference and it is very audible.

No surprise there. The room and placement of the speakers has a big impact on sound. To quantify the differences you are hearing would require making the correct measurements from your listening positions.
 
I'm not convinced by Danny. He lost me where he said that all that signal had to make it through the small connector that the speaker wire is soldered to that is attached to the binding post. In less than a couple of feet, all that signal has to make its way through the tiny wires in the voice coil. I don'tthin g the connector is the choke point in the system.
 
The resolution of modern equipment is far far better than the human ear. If it isn't measurable, then it cannot be audible.

The best audio designers I've known start with measurement, but fine tune by ear. The question I have is do we know how to measure all that the ear/brain perceives? (not likely) Microphones/computer are not the same as the ear/brain. Audio measurement is still an evolving science. Someday in the future I suspect there will be more answers.

Most audio tweaks are pseudoscience and rely on real physics mis-applied to music reproduction and supported by pitch-man level “evidence”.

I’d use a glaring example of such being RF shielding or other RF-level noise concerns in speaker cables, … when RF is far FAR from any audible frequency to humans or even a young canine.

In real science, real objective research, you spend much of your time trying to disprove your theory, trying to find any deviation from the conclusion that you have postulated, where in audio people spend all of their time finding supporting (and usually inapplicable to humans and music) “data”.

Raw wire is the best, eliminating as many connections as possible of course, adding fancy connectors and terminals is adding convenience not SQ. However, a good connection is a good connection and there are many ways to “skin this cat” that have no negative audible effect, and in most cases any new/clean connection will have the same effect regardless of the type of connection.

There are methods that age better. We did a lot of research into different base metals and plating in a company where I used to work, and the most important factor seemed to be keeping the pressure up enough to prevent corrosion at the contact point and where practical, dielectric grease to prevent corrosion from creeping in. Soldering is a great example of how to preserve a connection, you make a physical connection (as solder, even “silver solder” is a poor conductor compared to copper) and then seal it together with solder.

There have been studies that showed a significant improvement when a wire is removed and re-terminated, mainly due to the connection degrading over time, and many people who “hear an improvement” when replacing cables with new “upgraded” cables will hear this difference where simply cleaning the connections would have yielded the same improvement.

It is funny that probably the most significant factor in degrading connection quality is corrosion (even on a micro-level) and yet I don’t see a plethora of “audio-grade” dielectric grease offerings (it’s just silicone grease).

Screw-terminal connections, although inconvenient, are a great connection. Crimped and soldered lugs make this more convenient, even more convenient are banana or 5-way terminals, I prefer the 5-way terminals so that I have a choice. Gold plating is common and popular, and even though gold is a mediocre conductor (again compared to copper) it is pretty and it is convenient because it is resistant to most corrosion.

Some of my amplifiers are capable of high-current output in the 20Amp/channel range, and somehow good banana plugs and binding posts with dielectric grease seem to work just fine for me.
 
I like the gold-plated copper variety myself and highly recommend those. It's worth seeking them out specifically and researching to see what the ones you're interested in are made of. If they don't mention materials aside from the gold-plating they mostly all seem to have on the outside (which is a plus for a good, conductive, non-oxidizing plating material), it usually means their core is made of something less conductive and not as well suited for audio -like brass on the inside. Brass can lead to some sibilance and harsher presentation at upper frequencies at higher volumes.
 
Of course Binding Posts for speakers are one thing, but what about the other end of the cable? Some amplifiers have very poor 'binding posts' - some are only one or 2-way, or the spring loaded type where you have just a 'line contact' with the metal core of the speaker cable. If the cable is 'spade like' at the amplifier end you'll get a better connection, but if the cable is round - the contact area is really tiny! - and you can't get a really tight connection!
 
I don't take everything Danny Ritchie says as gospel, especially when he is selling one of his products.

I'll go with authentic Neutrik Speakon any day over just about anything.(I've seen some clones that are true disasters . . . )

- Locking
- Gold plated contacts
- Contacts self clean on insertion
- 25 or 40 amp current capacity
- 2, 4, or 8pole options
- Strain relief prevents damage if pulled.
- Very cost effective
- No associated "denies physics" audiophoolery

Not always possible to fit to an amp, but trivial on the speaker side.
 
It seems obvious to me, but apparently not to everyone, that how we perceive sound is not directly related to how it measures. So until we have a better grasp of how the brain processes sound (and multiple sounds from multiple locations at once), we can't expect measurements to match experience.
And having recently read an article about people with excessive sensitivity to any noise - not just loud noise, that's a different diagnosis - I'm even more aware of how different people hear differently. Maybe Danny can actually hear the effect of a steel screw - I don't think I can (or maybe I don't care enough to worry about it). But I do know that I've never liked loud noises and I'm very aware that I often get ringing or resonances in my ears even with unamplified human voices - this is based on listening to the choir at church. So my concerns are often not that of other audiophiles - huge dynamics and realistic volumes aren't attractive to me.
 
A different thought - I remember Julien Vereker of Naim tossing in the towel about gold plating on connectors. He said that rhodium plating was better sounding and maybe more durable - the coating process apparently requires multiple steps of plating and the result wasn't as transparent as the average person might imagine - but the market is driven by consumers, well informed or not, and sticking with rhodium was costing too many sales.

Isn't Rhodium a worse conductor than silver or gold? As far as I know, it's only slightly better than a good steel alloy. Pure stuff is a WHOLE LOT more $$$. :idea:
