Dual 1219 with static noise, help!

My 1219 plays well but when I move the tonearm to place it on a record, there is a static noise from the speakers. Sounds like a deoxit job but where to spray??

I have a little bit of this problem, I think it has to do with dirt or dust being inside the 4pivot points on the gimbal suspension. But who am i to know... Hopefully someone will chime in....

If this were my TT, I'd lock the arm down and move the wires at the rear where they leave the arm and enter the chassis just to rule out a broken or intermittent wire.

Another thought... my 622 has a cutout switch (actually it is just just bare copper strips that are exposed) that disconnects the headshell wires when the tonearm moves towards the rest... maybe the 1219 has this and they are corroded?

My 1216 had the same problem. I removed the cart. I found all four contacts black with oxidation. I used deoxit (use the bottle type) and a old toothbrush...tedious but my 1216 sounds fantastic.

Best guess [assuming that the two shielded arm wires are good]:
The static is because the metal arm is not properly grounded to the chassis. The bearings are providing the only ground for it.
Look at the contact piece in the arm head. There is a brass strip pressed firmly against the p.c. board at the trace corresponding to 'green'. If missing, bent away from the p.c. board, or the trace on the board is badly tarnished, you lose the arm ground.

The problem may disappear if you do the following mod:
Remove the turntable to amp ground wire, and toss it.
Take the cover off the mute switch. Solder a [thin] wire to the two solder tabs that already have the arm wire shields tacked to them, and then tack that to the metal chassis. There may be an unused solder tab under one of two screws that secure the mute switch. Replace cover.
