Dumbest thing someone has ever said to you?

I think that some of these questions are so dumb that I'm convinced that the people who asked them, more often than not, weren't ignorant so much as being intentionally silly...

I bought an 03 Saturn Vue V-6 auto all wheel drive last week and I looked all over under the hood trying to find the dipstick for the tranny fluid, with no luck. I'm convinced it don't have one. ;)

My dad bought a 2018 Ford Transit 150. It doesn't have a dipstick for the tranny- you have to buy a kit to install one. The idea is that the tranny fluid only needs to changed at relatively long intervals, so just take it to the dealer every 80,000 miles.

Since this an audio forum I'm gonna stick with audio. I've heard a couple people say this and it just drives me bonkers lol. People at work occasionally talk to me about vinyl because they know I'm into audio and have a nice little vinyl collection but they will come up to me and tell me how much they love vinyl and just how much better they sound then cds and I ask them what player they have and it's always a crosley or victrola, now if that's what they want to use and it makes them happy great but I just dont see how you can play records on something like that and be able to say how superior it sounds, unless they are playing there cds on some garbage boombox or something.

Oh man! Do y’all collect vintage bikes too??
Among other things....
1974 Raliegh Professional (Carlton Workshop, Reynolds 531)
1978 Jim Redcay custom road bike (Columbus SL & SP mix)
1997 Klein Mantra Comp

Spring is here, and medical issues prevent me from riding anything with 2 wheels....sucks....

I recall the dumb things the boffins said when CDs first came out when they were doing the initial marketing. Two examples:

  1. They said that because it was digital sound, it didn't matter what CD player was used because the output was exactly the same. Therefore, there would be no cheap/expensive CD players, because they would only be capable of exactly the same "perfect CD sound".
I recall thinking that there were so many arguments why this wasn't true that I didn't know were to start.

  2. They said that because CDs were on a hard plastic disk and there was error-correction software, that CDs were indestructible and would always deliver that "perfect digital CD sound". They would demonstrate by playing a CD, then removing the CD and making a straight cut with a scalpel blade from the inner hub to the outer edge, and playing it without error. This was impressive, as we were all familiar with how the same cut would sound terrible on a record.
However, I recall thinking how careless some people were, and that there would have to be a degree of damage that would make a CD unplayable. Later I learned that if they did the demo and made the cut in a circular direction would have demonstrated how fragile the CD disk really was.

I recall when in a shared student house asking a regular guest to take care of records she would put on the communal hifi. She would touch the playing surface, put the records on the floor rather than return them to the sleeves, etc. She told me that I was obsessive, and that it didn't really matter how records were handled.

A new one just today.

The serviceman came to replace the COX cable box. (He does all the field work, including stringing cable and was far more knowledgable about the cable boxes than the other techs who came out.) Looking at the equipment and speakers, and us connecting the projector component inputs to the new cable box..., together (you don't want to drop those cables behind the cabinet ), he said that he was interested in getting into audio.

I pointed at the Mermans and said, That's a JBL 18" woofer.

He pointed at the L300s and asked "That one?"

I said, "No, that's 15" woofer, a horn, and a slot tweeter.

I pointed at the Mermans and said, "That's an 18", a 10", and a Heil Air Motion Transformer."

"What's that?" was his reply, referring to the Heil. (As I've said, this is not a knew question for me.)

"A tweeter" I said.

"What's that?" was his comeback actually asking what a tweeter was.

"A speaker" I replied.

"Oh, that I understand" he said.

Nice guy too.

I was at my local Habitat ReStore where I found about 5 or 6 45's I wanted to buy. I took them to the counter to check out which was manned by a young lady that looked to be in her mid-20s. I handed her the 45s at which point she ask me, "Oh, are these 8-tracks?"

Right... go with which ever one is cheaper.

Many people think phonograph records have superior tone and a recording's inherent tone can shine through on something as ordinary as a table radio. In this hobby telling people what they should or shouldn't be hearing, or judging as good or bad once heard, is futile.

Maybe you misunderstood the point of this thread. You are not supposed to be posting such intelligent things. ;)
