Dust cover open, closed, or off?

I see absolutely no logic in attempting to keep records clean and then allowing them to rotate in the open air for about 20 minutes per side.

This is a potential problem. To establish wheather it becomes a real one, one would need in principle to evaluate the density of dust (small particles in suspension) in the air, which would yield a different answer for every one of us. I guess most people pay attention to this potential issue and resolve it by inspection of the record after playing a side and eventually using a brush before either flipping sides or taking it back to its envelope. In my personal case, I use a RCM before playing each side and dust off each side after playback. I´ve never discovered any noise increase or other negative effects throught the years. BTW, many new TTs (like the Clearaudio Emotion that I´m using now) just sell a separate acrylic cage to protect the TT from dust and that is not intended to be used during playback.

The quality of the bass degrades noticeably when the cover on the Delphi is left open. Since it is attached to the hinge with bolts it is removed more or less permanently.

It has been my policy over the years to play without the cover attached regardless of the deck, but I've found in some instances where the plinth is weakly constructed that a closed lid can improve the sound.

mostly i have left it on and closed during play. i was paranoid for a while and tried removing it during play, and that certainly takes the cover out of the equation.

then for a long while, i put a small pillow on top of the cover during play. that also is emotionally satisfying. currently, i have a SOTA sapphire which has an inner suspension like the AR and it matters not which i do.

closed during play assures less dust and eliminates the danger of a cat deciding to land on the player.

So the air you've captured with the cover down is completely dust free. It doesn't make any difference in my books. Most dust covers are made of plastic, which in itself, is a dust attractor. I leave my covers off all the time, unless I am going to do some work around them, then I put the covers on to protect the table from accidents.

No, the air captured will not, of course, be dust free but there will be a finite amount of dust compared to leaving the cover off.

And the plastic dust cover being a dust magnet is an advantage in that situation because some of the dust will be attracted to the cover instead of the record.

I stand by my original statement.

And I vote hifitommy's post the funniest in the thread. :D
