Dynaco A25 Speakers

The thing that bugs me is I see them for sale @ silly prices all the time, but I KNOW as soon as that transaction would take place, I'd see a pair at the Thrift for 20 bucks!

So I wait...

You're probably right but they sell for silly prices because they are good speakers and desired by many, including yourself. Supply and demand sometimes works for vintage gear, too. I almost paid a silly price for a pair, then found a pair on CL for a cheap price. After hearing them, the cheap price turned out to be the silly one. They're dang fine speakers.

Therein lies the rub! It's the stuff that'll make me waste an enormous amount of time and effort trying to save a hundred bucks.

I learned that lesson and now overpay when I see something I like. Seriously...my listening time is worth more than getting something below market value. I've "overpaid" for a lot of my gear if I could afford it at the time and now don't fall asleep with the acrid smell of thrift stores hanging in my sinuses. Gross. The Chicago Thrift stores are abundant with both gear and nastiness.

I'm in the same boat. Passed up on a rather rough pair locally for $165. I've recently been considering buying the drivers off Fleabay and building the boxes myself. Tweeters can be had for about 15 a piece, woofers less than 50. The madisound replacement woofers are $132 a frickin piece !!! Also, the woofers madisound sells as replacement are a few dB more efficient than the originals used in the A25. Ultimately, if building with new replacement drivers you would end up with a speaker that sounded different than the original. There is a company in the UK that sells kits / complete A25 clones using these madisound drivers. To overcome the different specs of these drivers, a different cross over was designed. Similar, yes, but A25 they would not be! The link to the aformentioned UK company:

SPENDY STUFF!

I've been watching the bay, and it appears that the A25 sells for anywhere from 130-300 depending on condition. I feel like the sweet spot is somewhere around 200.

As for waiting forever to find a pair locally in fear of missing a great deal, not worth it. You are talking a couple hundred dollars tops. Buy a nice pair off ebay. If a smokin deal comes up locally, buy those two! You know for fact that you could sell them, effectively making your ebay bought A25's free, if you play it right. Me, I would keep both pair. Maybe even stack them! At least this is the deal I've proposed to my wife.

Some of the same people that have said "man, you have some cool gear" to me are the same people who have said "I only buy what I find in a thrift store". Life's too short for that. We're not (usually) talking thousands of dollars here, just get it when you find it!

i would think just bite the bullet, if you really want them. Many good points raised, and I suppose a diy version could be close, but when its all said and done Im not seeing building them from scratch is going to save any money thats serious enough to worry about, and to play the wait it out game is ok, but phenominal deals like 20 a pair are few and far between as far as I can see. And so what if you did find a pair after the fact for 20 ..buy em, then your avg price would be 60 a pair or so, which is a bargain for them, or..sell off a pair and make maybe 60 or so on the deal.

As usual, the thrill is in the hunt!

I've been trying to find a pair after I stupidly let a local pair get away from me. BIN on eBay for $120, local pickup. In my own defense, this was before I had ever heard them, and really didn't believe the hype. Now I know!

A few months ago there was another pair, crappy pics, none with the grills off, but the seller said they worked perfectly and sounded great. Soooo, I put in a bottom-fishing snipe, and got them for $72! And the seller delivered them to my house!:yikes:

I listened for a bit and they really sounded great! So I started in on them by taking the grills off, and at first glance I was really confused...wtf?? One of them is...like...upside down or something? Then I realized I had a pair composed of one "regular" A25, and one very early model, with the aperiodic port on top and ScanSpeak drivers. Whoa!

So I simply enjoyed listening to them, and started a no-hurry search for another orphan to complete the pair. I recently found a seller who had a pair, one working and one not, so he split them up and sold them separately. I bought the non-working but cosmetically sweet one for around $50. I have some spare drivers, so that wasn't a concern at all.

However, talk about deja-vu all over again, I took off the grill and something looked odd. What...the tweeter's on the other side...HOLY COW, I've got a mirror-imaged pair!!!:banana: And I'm only in for about $125 for all three!

Life is good.:D

Dammit all. I thought I had weened myself off this A25 tit. I've never owned a pair, and I've only ever heard a single orphaned speaker in a repair shop. But it was oh so sweet. When I mentioned this to my father in law (who used to own a high end stereo and repair shop) he was confused. He said he sold a lot of them, but couldn't understand why. I guess he prefers his EV's.

I bought my first pair of A25's in the past couple weeks. I listened to them, and found them to be quite comfortable to listen to. Ended up seeing another pair a day later and through much delayed contact from the seller, I had a second pair. The second set I got has the original SEAS woofers, but was "Frankened" out as both tweeters were horribly replaced. One with a rectangular speaker (TV set maybe?) surrounded by tons of silicon to seal (?) the cabinet . The other one has a cheap replacement tweeter of an improper size, which is f-ing glued to the cabinet :sigh:. I've got at least a couple or few hours work to remove the crap they put in, but for the money I put in to the 2 pairs so far (< $100 :D) I'm quite satisfied. When I have some extra funds, I'll order new SEAS "replacement tweeters" and caps for both pairs and a soldering station (plus I'll learn how to solder ;)).

They're a good little speaker that are worth the attention of anyone who wants a quality speaker. Supposedly over one million pairs have been sold, so you'll run into some eventually I'd think :scratch2:.

Cheers and good luck hunting :thmbsp:

I think what Madisound sells are A-25XL woofers. The A-25XL was 3dB more efficient than the A-25 and used ceramic magnets in the woofer, not alnico. The tweeter was also different, and the level control had 3 positions vs. 5. I think if you used the Madisound drivers, and copied the A-25XL crossover, you'd have and A-25XL, which is not a bad thing.

I just bought a pair on sunday, and I am glad I did ! They are a wonderful speaker, now I know what all the hype is about. Mine are near mint in everyway. They cost me $145 and a 6 hour roundtrip. Not a steal by any means, but I am glad I did it.I also picked up some Wharfedales,Universities, and a Marantz 2230 so it was well worth the trip.

The A25s are one of the few non-JBL speakers that you'll hear the 70salesguy compliment! Always thought that they were good performers in a nice little package. I've had my eyes open for a pair at a good deal for quite some time now, with the intended use being in my office.

I'm still interested in a pair, but not quite as much since I picked up a pair of JBL 4406s that I intend to use in my office system.

A pair of A35s are one of only 2 pairs of speakers that I sold that I probably should have kept. I bought them at a good price as "old stock" that came from one of our other stores as part of a shipment of inventory that we were to liquidate, and after a few weeks or so, turned them at a good profit. As a college student, I didn't really have the room to have them as well as my JBL L-100s.

But I would still be interested if a pair of A25s or A35s showed up on my local CL at a good price!
