Emit version question

Can someone tell me if the Emit tweeter in the Qa is the same as the ones in my RSII's? Wondering if getting an inexpensive pair of Qa's would be a good way to get a back-up set of emits.

No, the EMITs in the Qa are not the same as in later models. Those EMITs were only used in the Qa, Qb, Qe, Quantrum 4, Quantum 5 and Quantum Jr. Look for speakers in the RS series to find compatible versions.

Probably not a job for a beginner, though. I've never done it, and I'm not sure I'd want to (although there are instructions online if you want to see what's involved).

Thanks guys. They are square with center holes like the ones on my RSII's, but silver. They are asking $50 for the Qa's so not bad either way I guess.

No, that's a pretty good price, actually. Less that half of what a single EMIT will sell for on eBay most of the time.

The silver EMITs can usually be found for $25 or so, so yeah, that's a good price for a complete set of Qas, assuming you actually want to own a pair (they're quite good, but the midrange is a bit laid back compared with their 3- and 4-way speakers).

Of course, it can't hurt to try the silver EMITs in your RSIIs. The impedance is the same, so there's not much risk of damage. Worst that can happen is that you don't like the sound and you keep searching for the correct ones.

It's easier than putting a new surround on a woofer. I had to replace four diaphragms when I bought my IIb's. They still played but were badly melted and all bubblely. Never had an emit blow on my own.

The square silver emit has a slightly different diaphragm than the rs series. The solder buttons are in a different location by a few millimeters and the diaphragms themselves are not as shiney. They can be swapped out too but you need to elongate the slot in the spacer with a round needle file so it is not pressing on those solder buttons.

All the EMIT Colbalt Saleriam tweeters are the same, other than looks and color. I have made custom Infinity speakers since the 80s and all those will work fine, as long as you adjust, for some, the speaker mounting hole.

There was a change with the Kappa series. the magnet material, although those also spec very close. Infinity was very keen on wanting their customers to order exact replacements, yet all will provide the same acoustics.

Other than the EMIT full source, all use the same diaphragm, the only difference is in the housing and color.
