EPICURE Model 5 speakers questions

I don't know them except that I'm kicking myself for passing on a pair once for $10. They sounded GREAT. They're after what is supposedly Epicure's heyday, but I thought they sounded at least as good as the famed 100s do (and I like them, too). You'll find specs here:

I've got a pair of very similar-looking Epicures, but with more drivers. They sound very nice, indeed. I've seen a couple different sizes in that series, all with similar cabinets and those distinctive "plastic" bases, and they all appear to have similar drivers with those woven-looking carbon-fiber cones, just in different combinations. Maybe not the most famous EPIs, but still quite good speakers, nonetheless.
I've been telling myself to sell mine, as I have too many speakers, some even better speakers, etc... but they are still here. Guess that says something good about them.

I've got a similar pair of Epicure Model 4. The difference is bigger cabinet and woofer in the 4 vs. the 5. Nice speakers, nice sounding. Make sure you check the foam surrounds. Yours look good, and maybe they've been recently redone, I can't tell from the pic.
kfa888, yes, they do look similar to the woven material in your Altecs, but the Epicure woofer is actually molded out of VERY thin styrene, and that "waffle" pattern helps give them stiffness.
Incidentally, I recapped my Model 4 crossovers with Dayton polypropylene caps, and since I had a few of that value lying around, I matched them EXACTLY with my DMM (yes, mine can measure capacitance), and the way they imaged after was REALLY nice!
Recapping the crossover isn't expensive, there's only one in each speaker!
Mr. Burhoe was a genius when it came to building drivers and cabinets that worked well together, and required a minimum of crossover components. And often, the resulting sound was spectacular, especially given the era most of them were built.

I picked up a pair of Model 5 at a thrift last month for $5 each. The cabs were faded and scratched, woofer surrounds with big holes, and just a ton of dust. Cleaned them up, used some Howard's restore-a-finish on the cabs, had a friend replace the surrounds and replaced the single cap with a Dayton and they now look and sound very good.
A very well balanced two-way speaker with better cabinet and driver build quality than comparable speakers. Not as bright as some of the EPI speakers I have heard.
Right now I use them in my garage rig and they sound very good.
I would not put them in the same league as Dynaco A-25 (one of the best sounding two-ways, IMO), but they are close.

Hi fellow Ak'ers..HMMM,,, make that a big hmmmmm
i just this week found a pair of Epicure Model 5's in the Goodwill Bins..imagine!!! $5.00 for the pair..and their cases have a ding here and a scratch there..BUT, the front speaker face and the speaker elements are excellent! all this talk about foam edges coming undone..mine have soft pliable black rubber speaker edges..like my Polk speakers do....all the time i find what ONCE used to to be great speakers, Advent, Pioneer, Realistic, Technics, etc only to have the foam speaker edges go self destruct...My old Marantz Imperial 7's, and a fine pair of KLH 8 inch 2-way speakers, no model number but they look just like JBL's that size are great......so i carefully avoid speakers with foam edges....give me a soft pliable neoprene or black rubber edge, or a resin cloth roll edge like the early Marantz speakers......the kind that doesnt self destruct....

They sound decent, but a little too deep in tone for my tastes. They do sure look pretty though. Out of all my speakers, I would consider them my best looking pair.
Sometimes I stack them for fun, and make a 7 foot column.
It looks like yours have already been reformed. When I bought both pairs of mine, the foam disinegrated within minutes after hooking them up to a amp.

I have a pair of the Model 4's, I like them very much, maybe a little more than my EPI 140C's. Good purchase.

Looks like prices are going up
I just bypassed a pair at the local SA marked $8 ea. Same condition, I really don't need or have room for another pair of speakers. Impressive build quailty, though.This was actually the first time I've seen anything at the local SA that I've even though twice about, though. The GW's are much more productive, not to mention the Mormon one and the SPCA...
