ESS amt 1a Bookshelf speakers: bypass circuit breaker?

Thanks!!!
I’ll take that as a complement Ethel!

Take it how you want. You don't think people can see through your childish behavior and personal attacks?

You hold yourself out as some kind Heil expert and when I pointed out that your understanding of how it works was incorrect, as did others, you decided to go on a personal vendetta.

You said that you were done cluttering up this thread with a bunch of ..., but I'm betting that you're not as you need to have the last word because that's the kind of person you obviously are.

I'm done with you. :bye:

No need to apologize automojo. Nothing wrong with a little banter on the speaker forum. If choosing EVO oils for the 26uf cap, looks like the 22uf + 3.90uf would be the only combo among the available lineup.

Thanks David- much appreciated!
Yes that would be the ticket with the Evo’s
Or if you really wanted to splurge-15 uf Evo Oil and a 10 uf Superior Z. Not quite the 1/3-2/3 but close.
I think you would be happy with either!
I have to say, I have been having some fun with experimenting with a few different caps.
If you have somewhat of a audio budget... at least IMHO you get a nice bang for the buck over (some) interconnect power wires etc.
The Gee cap review is a good read- especially when you’re contemplating overhauling your speakers

FIY.. I gave Will a set of Evo Oils to try in his Mojo Modded AMT3’s
Done me more than a couple favors, and wanted to share what I thought was a great improvement.
Curious if he will be looking at those new 4 ohm l pads with the new diaphragms.
He has a fairly well damped and carpeted listening room
My new one has a rug and wood floors.

As far as a budget, I will be spending someone else's money. I am reviving a relative's 70's college system. Sony PS-3300 turntable with Stanton cartridge, Marantz 2230 receiver, and the AMT 1a bookshelf speakers. So I obviously have to factor in the performance of the first two components in the audio chain. This project started off with the goal of getting the system up and running...will need to have another conversation about how far to go with rehabing the rest of the system.

Got it!
If he is just looking a nice neutral cap a Jantzen Cross cap or Standard Z cap would be just fine more or less a refresh + I would certainly recommend these over the Dayton/Bennic poly caps.

Wow-talking about wearing it on your sleeve!
The only thing I recall being wrong on was how the Heil diaphragm "polarity" worked-and as I recall I mentioned "I stand corrected.
It will most likely happen again
Big deal?
No ones perfect-including yourself.
I don't recall ever calling myself a Heil expert- or fancy myself as one.
Other then having a lot of practical experience with mainly the AMT3's-as I mentioned numerous times.
Will is easily more the Heil expert for that matter..I easily defer to him...
And my Heil journey has seemed to benefit quite a few people with their setup from what I can see.
Pretty much sums that up regarding myself and the Great Heils.
Just a FIY-you might also want to look at you reactions when others disagree with you-before throwing stones...just a suggestion...
The rest makes little sense, IMHO, except perhaps paranoia, unfounded anger, self doubt, jealousy, just guesses.
"Last Word?"
"I'm done with you"?
FIY, they do have programs to deal with that stuff...might be worth a shot.
Cheez.......

A few pictures of one of the woofers...after receiving them back from ESS. Rick did both a re-cone and re-magnetization.The foam surround was glued to the front of the cone, as opposed to the backside. I know that some people have an issue with this method, but I am not sure if it is a valid one.

Any suggestions on how high to get these bookshelf speakers off of the floor for best performance? Also, it looks like the Heil can be rotated 90 degrees so the cabinets can be positioned horizontally. Good or bad idea?

There is nothing wrong with front mounting the surround. All the ESS stuff I have seen has always had front mounted surrounds. Was yours back mounted before? I think front mounting much more common than rear mounting.
You said in post #45 that you are setting this system up for a relative. What is the setup in his room? Will the speakers lay down or stand up? If lay down, rotate the Heils. What is the predominant listening position? If sitting in a chair, I would want the speakers at chest or head level. If you want the appearance of more bass, then they are better in corners with more reflective surfaces around them as bass propagates around the sides of the speakers and more walls near the speaker will reflect more bass. If you don't need booming bass, move them away from corners and away from walls and reflective surfaces. The room decor factor will dictate placement. then its experimentation and compromise.

Nice!!
My AMT 5’s ”with the Power Ring Heils can also be rotated
I use them on the floor
Powered by a vintage Technics SA-600 receiver for movies etc.

Well jcidave, I should stop putting so much faith in my memory! I found a "before" picture and you are correct. It was originally attached on the front. I guess I have been around too many 70's JBL's, where the foam is on the backside of the cone.
Due to the pandemic, I have not been in the listening space. Will probably end up with some stands...maybe around 28 inches in height.IMG_1061a.jpg

Nice!
Are those sealed, or bass reflex?

I ordered a pair. If they make a difference, I'll be back to answer a question that i don't recall ever seeing a definitive answer to here. I suspect that my present diaphragms may be getting a bit anemic, but it could also be the industrial hearing loss, although the domes upstairs do have a noticeably higher level of tweet, just not as smooth.

Dont know where you ordered your diaphragms from, but I see today on the ESS website that Rickys increased the price to 100 bucks each. Doesnt look like that has filtered through to Simply Speakers yet.

I got them at Simply Speakers. I noticed the increase at ESS also. I'm still waiting on them. They'll probably be installed 30 minutes after the UPS guy comes down the street.

I've written to ESS recently asking if they were going to have any sales soon on the Great Heil or could offer free shipping. Yesterday, got a message back direct from Ricky saying due to tough business conditions and supplier price increases that prices will probably be increased soon.
I will also be very interested to hear your thoughts on the new diaphragms.

Yep me too
As mentioned I have my brightness control now at soft
Running stock mids
1040 SF woofers
Similar SPL to Dayton ST 255-8
But again I had one diaphragm down 1.5-2db
Which was evened out by a malfunctioning transistor and switch in thee we other channel on my recently repaired AP1000 preamp.
But running my new Van Alstine 10 RB tube preamp while the Proton was being repaired made things quite clear

I assume you will measure these before you install them. I am thinking that the AMT3 used to use an 8 ohm version of the diaphragm. One pair of spares I have in the old original series measure about 5.5 ohms each. I don't think anyone; ESS or simply speakers is selling anything but a 4 ohm version anymore. I don't think simply speakers lists the impediance spec. Its one size fits all. So I will be especially interested in hearing about the new ones in your 3s.
