Fathom F112's in my system

That was a good one! :lmao:

I hope you saw it to the end and saw that the guy came up triumphant.

Playing whack-a-mole is exactly how I felt when I tried to integrate a sub with my room and system.

Take care of one room node, and 'nother one jumps up, and so on, and so on.

No wonder most systems with subs sound awful - I doubt 1% of the owners go through 10% of the trouble you went through.

most ? - I would think that most owners of high quality audio gear like McIntosh who use subs probably know how to integrate a sub into their system. If not, I would assume they know where and how to get assistance.

most :scratch2:

I don't mean most of the system of people in this forum, but definitely most of the systems out there. When I go to a friend's house and they want to show off their system, the first thing that jumps out is an ungodly, unnatural, overpowering, fatiguing, one-note bass. BTW, I've also heard the same in some high-end audio showrooms and the salesman explained, people want to FEEL the bass they are paying for.

I agree! I thought the one-note bass was normal and hated it after 5 minutes.
Now when I get the sub to where it sounds good to me I am not sure I can hear it vs straight LS360's.

Some pics to go with the long post above. :D

Very nice review. I haven't used a sub for years in my 2 channel set-up since I sold my Monitor Audio Isobaric sub that had 2- 12 inch down firing drivers. One thing that I did get right was the integration in 2 channel.

I did tell myself if I every bought another sub it would have to have EQ features, adjustability from the sitting area and possibly front firing drivers.

You are absolutly right about the sound stage opening up. With the right sub the whole musical range gets weight not just single note boom, boom, boom.

In the future if you have time, try the sub in the middle or left or right of center image. I found the sound to be perfect once it's dailed in.

Hey guys, I have been off the forum a few days and I just saw this thread. Funny thing is that I was just at a buddy's new house and he just installed his new system featuring twin JL F112 subs! The rest of the system is wonderful Wilson Duette speakers, Classe electronics, Transparent cables, and a ton of Crestron controls. In a very big room the stage was enormous with those little speakers, probably much to do with the subs as Serge suggested.

However, the room was not fully furnished, very reflective and not a great shape. The subs were not dialed in at all and were extremely strong but very boomy. Still, it sounded quite good considering.

So when I got home, I sat down wondering how my system compared to this wonderful system i had experienced (yes, there was wine involved!) Well I'm happy to report that my system BLOWS MY FRIENDS AWAY!:banana::music:

But boy did I love those subs...

Gold furutech plug?:scratch2:

Serge, you should check out the new Carbon Fibre Furutech plugs. Wow! And at US$500 for a pair for the shuko ones over here, not cheap either!

Btw, we did a shoot out over here with the furutech plugs comparing gold and rhodium ones in a blind test on my Accuphase DP700 with identical furutech power cords. There was a discernible difference and the guesses were correct each time! Rhodium has a somewhat more detailed sound whereas gold was more mellow and smooth. I guess it allows you to fine tune a system in pretty much the same way as cables allow.

I use the rhodium ones (UK plug + IEC with furutech cables) on my RGPC 1200 and Isotek Titan and also swapped my Crystal Piccolo PC connectors for the rhodium ones (US + IEC).

Nice Carbon Fiber plugs Howie, too bad I don't have AC outlets in my Ferrari, they would match nicely. ;)

JR, the Fathoms have amazing amount of performance. When I ran the automatic calibration sequence, there were objects rattling through out the house, even upstairs and the front door not to mention the room they were in. It scared the crap out of the dog and it was a good thing I warned my wife in advance. :D This is not what the subs are all about though. If someone doesn't take their time to understand and calibrate these subs, it will be anything but an enjoyable or musical experience. Once dialed in properly, at least what I would consider smooth and natural, it would be difficult to even tell they were in the system yet the bass extends to 20Hz evenly. They have added a tremendous sense of weight, scale, spacious and realistic sound stage and overall enjoyment to my system so far. :thmbsp: I can only imagine what will happen when Ivan goes to calibrate his Gothams in his system, I hope he is careful with the gain settings... :yikes:

Howie, those are real nice. I doubt the subs will appreciate the difference but maybe I'll get some for my front end components and amps down the road. :scratch2:
