FM amplified antenna?

is it ok to hook up a modern day fm amplified antenna to my old pioneer sx 850 on the 300 ohm connector or safer to use a dipole antenna?

It's safe enough but don't expect an epiphany in performance. Use a balun, or matching transformer, though.

It depends on your actual reception conditions.

At long distances from stations to listen to, and/or where there are strong re-reflected signals and/or other interferences, a well designed, oriented and connected sharp directional amplified antenna may “save” the situation.

In good reception conditions, where the signal is good and strong, it may overload the HF stage of the receiver and heavily distort the sound.

If the receiver is just near the station to listen to, even non-amplified antennas may need a considerable attenuation by that reason. Some tuners have a “1:1 – 1:20” ratio antenna terminals. High class receivers normally have several sensitivity positions switch.

I use a 75 ohm transformer and I've found that it works quite a bit better then a passive antennae.

I use an amplified antenna similar to a Terk.It is hooked to my Pioneer TX-7500 and works like a charm. It has an adjustable strenght control so as to not overload the FM signal coming in. You adjust the signal to what you need according to my Tuner's meters:)
