Franken VAL's

It took me a few years but I finally realized those drivers sound a lot like my HD600's but the bass is actually better and hits harder. So far I still can't hear any problems with the crossover I have but I can SEE it at ZilchLabs - the Z19 is almost perfect up top but can the 2235 run to 1.2K nice and clean? My crossovers are at 1K.
As is they sound very, very good and the crossover tweaking would be just that - tweaking.
Every time I turn the tunes on I enjoy:music: I'm not sure what I like better the sparkling low distortion highs or the hammering low distortion bass :D:D
Steve

Curious where you have the attenuators on Z19 set? I run the very high freq closed and the mid-high 1/4 to 1/2 open. Any more on the high freq and it gets very bright.

No Z-19s' here

I am running the Z mans version of the 4430 crossover (N3134)

We are running the same crossovers- not bad at all.

Yes, I've heard Rick's and like the sound. His are even mirror imaged.

My build was intended for comparison with his, and Zilch said he had put more development into the Z19.

Z-19 vs. Z-4430

When mine are finished they will also be mirror imaged. Rick is also using different woofers than I am. I do plan on making at least one Z-19 to compare to the Z-4430's and use what I like better.

Cool, I'm interested to see which you prefer.

I am currently using the Z19 on my Barzi/JBL confabulation. I am attempting to fix a characteristic I am not happy with. Not sure if it's a SNAFU on my part or something else.

Trying to keep up with the Jones' here. I now have a pair of the 2452H-SL drivers and waveguides. Just placed an order at PE for the crossover bits to build the high pass filter Zilch derived on the PCD Flex Your Meddle thread. I'll build one up and see if I can remember how to measure it and report back. I'll be mating them to a pair of LE14H-1's. Stay tuned.

What cabs are you using, and can you post the schematic diagram you're using.

Thanks,

BHamm

I have what I believe are the same exact Barzilay cabinets that you have. They are about 3.5 cu. ft. and are smaller than the Duffinator cabinets.

The crossover is posted here...

It's shown for the JBL 2432H driver but, earlier in the thread Zilch tested it with a 2452H-SL and the results were about the same. I'll be doing something different for the low pass on the LH14H-1. Not sure what at the moment.

My cabinets can be seen here as currently built with LE14A and B&C DE250 drivers..

I just started reading the "Flex Your PCD Mettle" thread and have a lot more to go.

Your cabs are the same as mine and look very nice. I'll be watching for how you compensate for the LE14H-1's as the H-3's are so similar:thmbsp:

Z-19 and'stuff'

I have some Altec 411Z woofers and 806A CD's on H811 horns.
The N3134 that I am using is from the early 80's so not much 'newer' than the Z-19. Both are better than the original thanks to Zilch.
Steve
Sure Model #'s would help a bit  :D

It's funny how the Model 19 crossover is opening up some eyes after all it is a 1976 design ! That us 19 owners have enjoyed for a longtime !:smoke:

In honor of Zilch

I am stopping the build of the FrankenVals. He deserves a better effort so I am going to go all out and do a proper modern cabinet design to get every last bit of performance out these drivers and crossover. First I need to finish my table saw setup them I will post a link to the new build.
Steve

Looking forward to your build. I was going to "modify" my Heath AS-101's but looked at the cabinets and how they were constructed and decided not to. Cabs too small really and the fact I'd have to make a new baffle board to get proper ports (real tubes not "spaces" around the horn) and decided better to rebuild into another cabinet.

Finally made some measurements as stated above. I'm a rookie at the measurement thing so use caution with these results. I measured the response using the Zilch crossover from the above link with 3 different lpad settings. Looks pretty good to me.

Took me about 2 hours to generate this plot. Zilch was a machine.

Perhaps of some additional interest, I measured my two drivers for comparison on the same crossover. One is an original 2452H-SL made in USA, the other was a US made 2452H and I installed a Mexican made SL diaphragm. The difference may be normal variation, or possibly an alignment issue.

1/6 octave smoothing used on the graphs.

That looks good to me comparing them to some of Z's older post with the 2452H-SL. Have you considered how to attenuate the lower end for your LE14H-1's?

You are so correct - he was uploading plots just a few seconds of showing them to me:thmbsp: I realized that he was ALWAYS on line and working on his projects.
Can you send me the crossover schematic? The ones on the big thread seem to have been constantly updated. I am very seriously looking at making a pair of the HPA+ sitting on top of B380 clones. I am also thinking of using a pair of Gordons 2236 woofers with the 2432H for the all out E-wave build. Both would be good - just need $$$. I really need some great garage speaks and the 2236/2432H would be a simply awesome build. I spend most of my free time in the 'man cave' so this is not a silly thing to do.
Steve

I used the high pass from this schematic for the 2452H-SL. It's from the "flex your mettle thread". As you know, Zilch was sort of co-developing this crossover for the 2452 and 2432 drivers. I believe my tests confirm that his final result worked well for both drivers.
