Franken VAL's

I'll be curious if the effect is as convincing in stereo -- my experience is that often it is not. There are many good things about stereo, but two speakers playing into two acoustic spaces confuses some thing.

Is only because I have only completed one speaker. I am still amazed at how good my half assed patched together non-rigid compromised cabinet actually sounds sitting in my room. The bass that one of these 2235's is astounding - and that is with a little 30 watt amp. Can't wait to build a less compromised (still in the Val cabinet) left channel.

My point isn't to give you a hassle about listening only to one speaker. Rather it's to point out that sometimes one speaker can sound clearer than two, especially if you are in a different room from the speakers. In the same room, the stereo information is valuable, but listening from another room, it can cause interference. Just my experience. Enjoy them in mono and in stereo!

No offence or hassle taken

Just pointing out the amazing clean deep effortless BASS (I also enjoy hearing the decay of the kick drums via the 2452H-SL's on the wave guides) these 2235H's that the Zilch miester directed me to get for my project. I am more than pleased.
I guess this project could be considered a 'not so econo-wave' as it kicks ass for what it costs - yet follows the general idea behind the econo-wave.

I think what you have here is Uber-Wave. Econo is totally out the window but who cares? I'll be curious how you compare the Z19 crossovers to the current version.

I'm trying to find a pair of 2452H-SL's. Man, those are hard to come by.

Which would be a reason econo-wave is not out the window. Gotta find a way to make this with current-production drivers.

The BMS 4555 is also a very viable upgrade 1.5 inch driver and readily available for about $160 each. It works well with the Z19 and Zilch developed another crossover for it on the Flex Your Mettle forum.

I have never heard either but suspect that the 2452H-SL is supreme.

Some people hear musical notes as colors... it's a surprisingly common form of synesthesia. See Oliver Sacks' book Musicophilia.

Just sayin'...

I know a guy who hears pitches in odors. He claims that an A smells like hair and an F# smells like valve stems. But in unison, they smell like pizza crust (NY style). He also says ALL diminished chords have a sweet smell , which I wouldn't have suspected.....weird.

The 2452H-SL is a current production driver

Just a really expensive one at ~$1450 each. Just keep on E-bay and hit the buy it now for $300 a pop. Might take a month or so. It's worth it. The 2235H however is out of production, just re-cone a 2225 so no big deal.

Which would be a reason econo-wave is not out the window. Gotta find a way to make this with current-production drivers.

Z-19s

They are flatter but the crossover is at 1200 vs 1000 so there are other compromises to be made. Do I stress the 2235 to play harder to get a LITTLE bit better response from the CD? Right now it has the classic BBC 'sag' in the mid-range and sounds damn good.

Right now I am enjoying messing with what I call 'pre-emptive bass energy attacks'. Collective Soul has a bunch of these on their 1st album. It's fun to crank the volume and stand back in the 'coming of the storm' then the bass hits - it's pretty fun and makes me giggle every time and this is still mono with 30 watts. Can't wait for stereo and bi-amping madness:D In a little bit my wife's friend that gave me the Vals will be here and I am going to hit her with a wall of sound. She will love it. She gave these to me to make them better. I told her she could sell them for $$ but she gave them to me instead.

I have the wood for the real 'FrankenVals' and will start cutting, gluing/screwing this week. Working on getting a router pattern (so I can flush-mount) for the waveguides - I will probably have a pattern machined so it's perfect. I am having a heck of a time finding a drawing of the wave guide to give to my machinist. JBL has it hidden - I know I have seen it before.

Curious why you abandoned the Valencia cabinets? Too small or just not well built? What size are you going with?

Same size

The Vals were never intended to be sealed and they are not. They are also not non resonant - no need when they are not port loaded. I am sealing and 'beefing' them up by adding an additional layer of quality plywood and adding ports. They are almost the perfect size at 5 cubic feet.

got any pics of the added plywood and sealing? What did you tune the cabs too? What size port are you using.?

I have a set of valencia cabs that I am considering ewaving.

Here you go

they are tuned to 30Hz but will go down deep (look up the JBL B380 Sub.) Single 4" port about 4" long. In the final version I will be using 2 4" X~12" ports. You will be amazed if you go this route. The JBL 2235H (get a blown 2225 or 2226 and get it re-coned by a JBL guy) simply ROCKS and 'kicks ass and takes names' it also sounds great at milliwatt levels that I normally listen at. Waiting to get a deal on ebay for the 2452H-SL is worth it - these things are world class drivers and are worth the wait. I come home from work every day looking forward to hearing my speaker - my wife is not so happy (f'it.:D) BTW I am driving this thing with a cheap Rotel 30W integrated amp and it will play loud enough to hurt - with ONE speaker. See my thread on the the 'FrankenVals' for more pics I will be posting more soon. I just finished my first round of updates to the Vals. Time for family now. I will see what I can do in the next few weeks.

Reinforcement pics

Here you go. I know the place is a mess. Just 3/4" plywood and a 2x2 for cleats, add some glue and lots of screws. Just to make it a little bit 'E' the plywood is recycled shipping crates. Why someone would use cabinet grade plywood for a onetime shipping crate is beyond me.

Do you intend to use any shelf bracing? I built the walls of my Barzi's up with birch ply and MDF so all the walls are at least 1 inch.
