Update

I received the new diaphragm from GPA this morning. Got off work early, installed it, and connected them to my newly revamped X-101-C. Wow!!! That's the best I can say. After I let my ears get reacquainted with them and dialed in the L-pads. Even with the Pyle driver on one side they are great.

Next item of business will be to get two Lambda td15 drivers. According to WinISD they should play down to 29 hz with no modification to the cabinets or ports.

Lambdas. Cue evil laughing. Should be able to rearrange your living room with TD15s in those cabs.

How big are those cabs, cubic footage wise? I think WinISD had the TD15X at around 34Hz f3 in a 5.5 cu. ft. box.

Are the Altec mids as great as I've read?

I really like the mids of these. I think the original xover caps this guy put in cuts them off too high though. I think I'm going to try a PE 3 way xover with these and see what happens. If the calculator I used was right them these boxes were 13 total cubic feet after displacement of all drivers and horns.

Joel from the one pic you posted it also looks like one of the woofers has an aluminum Dust Cap which maybe a Musical Instrument woofer.Next order of business should be matching woofers.I would put 416's in there with that kind of volume they should sound real nice. Also Crossovers need to be replaced IMO to match the T/S specs of the drivers and horn.It looks like a 511B horn 500 Hz Altec horn. With that horn you could cross them over at (500 Hz -800 Hz) depending on the woofers used. I would remove the 075 as it doesn't go much higher than the 802 and is very directional IMHO.Think beam of light from a flashlight that's how the HF's are emitted from those drivers also looks like it is mounted so they would be over your head (HF's) in a sitting position (Too High).Make it a straight 2-Way. Install the Z-19 or a rebuilt Model 19 crossover. :thmbsp: (As previously Noted)

BTW: I personally would stay away from off the shelf Crossovers. As Crossovers should be matched to drivers T/S parameters specifically !

When they aren't matched they sound terrible IMHO. (Wasted $ Moolah $) :thmbsp:

As for the woofers, lambdas will play from 30-2k with no modifications to the box. I'm going to cross em at 1k just so I can use the horn down that way. If I'm not mistaken the horns would play down to 500. I just don't think I want to use them that low I want them to use that energy were it counts for me. As for the 075 JBL says 2500 on up past human hearing. Others on AK say they roll of at 15k. That would make them useless like you said. From what I've heard so far they extend higher than the horns. I can hear up to 21k most of the time. I don't here 19 k for some reason though. Tonight I'm going to remove them and see if I really hear a difference or if it's placebo.

The height of the speakers from my recliner actually has the horns just barely above ear level only on the tops of them if I recline. (The recliner sits pretty high.) The 075s are just bellow ear level. Thanks for the tip on xover selection. I didn't realize they had to match t/s specs.

I was actually going to suggest these earlier, but... you would have just thought I was partial to them because I like mine so much..

You WILL NOT be disappointed with you choice of these... I got lots of high end woofers around my place, but my Lambda's are by far the best..

BTW, I see JT suggested the BMS compression drivers for you too.. .and I whole heartedly agree... JT has heard my Barziwaves, which I built with the TD15M and the BMS 4555 CD's... super sounding speakers... I sure wish I had your boxes to put my parts in...

I built some of the first Z19 crossovers used on this forum for my barzi's and have been super happy with the results..

By order of the grace of God, i hereby declare those mothers BEHEMOTHS.

A heck of a lot of worms can fit into your household, now.

How have I not seen this thread yet?
+1. Geeze. Like all these guys are saying, you can sell some of those drivers, do a small amount of DIY work, and have basically the exact sort of speakers that I want for free. I will do my best not to hate you. :thmbsp:

Just finished two blind tests performed with two different participants. Both came to the same conclusion, they could hear more highs with the 075s than with out. One said that it seemed to not emphasize the mids as much when they were being used. I have to agree and will be keeping them in the mix. Imo.

Altec Beast, I did put a 1" downward tilt on the speakers and it has helped with the imaging a tad. :)

Update

I picked up some JBL D123s the other day from a fellow AKer. I pulled out the mismatched 15's and put these 12's in using a plate to fill the gap. They sound much smoother than before. Better sound stage depth is very apparent. They also have better bass response using the 12's instead. They like this cabinet better than the 15's did. I'm pretty happy with the performance for the moment.

The 802's do have nice high end, but you really need to add compensation via the crossover to run them two-way, even with the exponential altec horns. In that case you could ditch the tweet. Better to go with an existing design though, rather than swapping in drivers without taking measurements and tweaking the x-over. You can get good money for the 802's with the new GPA diaphragms.
