Fried Speaker Identification and Hookup

I just tried calling Fried Audio and the guy could not help me with this older model but he suggested I contact IMF in France.

Fried Audio and IMF in France will not be of any help.
Stephan who has the IMF website has no knowledge of the former Fried Products speaker line as well as Fried Audio.

As I stated in one of my previous posts you need the amp in straps connected to the satellite terminals.
Since the straps are missing use a piece of wire to connect the satellites to the amp in terminals.
You might also try connecting the bi amp terminals.
Since your model have the bi amp terminals that model might have the parallel crossover configuration and not the series configuration.

I tried jumping the Amp In and Satellite terminals straight across and I tried crossing them to no avail.

I wish had the speakers here to diagnose what the problem is.

All of the Fried models I have were built from raw parts.
I built all my enclosures and purchased the crossover parts.
Fried supplied the drivers with the crossover and enclosure plans.

Does your friend whose father passed away remember listening to both the satellites as well as the subwoofers at the same time?

It wasn't his father, it was a friend of his' father, so, he never heard them. maybe we can do a video chat sometime when I'm over there Jim. thanks for responding. it's frustrating because I know these speakers sound great.

If you have the amp in connected to the subwoofers the subwoofers work?
When you have the the satellites connected to the amp the satellites work?
But when you jump the satellites when the subwoofers work no sound comes from the satellites?

I had my son take a photo of the terminal inputs of my subwoofer to satellite.
Just jump the positive subwoofer amp in to the satellites positive input.
As you can see the jumper is only on the positive input.
It's been a long time since I looked at the back of my subwoofers.

I did hook them up this way and the subwoofers did not perform. I will venture over there again and take video of different configurations. any requests?

these sound amazing. we have to get these working.
Hello Kdj, does anything work if you just plug in from amp to "Amp In"? I mean, does the sub work with just that connection?

Does the Bi-amp terminal say "Bi Amp In"?

This is pretty confusing... I'm kind of thinking you might want to try the jumpers between the "To Satellite" terminals and the "Bi Amp In" terminals (if that's what they say). I'm imaging a jumper from the factory connecting the "To Sat" and "Bi Amp In" so it is all plug and play to start, requiring you then to disconnect the jumpers and do another connection to a second amp if you want to bi amp the sub. The lines on the bottom of the terminal cup might suggest that the "Amp IN' and "To Sat" are already connected, so maintain your "Amp In" connection as you've done.

Jim PA, do you see any problem, or any merit to this suggestion? In spite of my suggestion, I can't figure out in my head, or on paper, how the crossover is managing to split the signals between the sub and the satellites. My suggestion seems backward, and yours made perfect sense, except it doesn't explain what the "Bi Amp In" would do... "Bi Amp In" makes me think it should be getting a signal, thus the suggestion for the jumper between "To Sat" (that seems to be getting a signal) to "Bi Amp In".

Oh man, I hope you get them working! They are an awesome combo! I used to work at an Audio store in Michigan and we were a Fried dealer. I lusted after his sub/sat combos. Bud came in the store a few times to talk about his speakers and that was always a cool experience. Unfortunately I don't remember a hook-up like this specifically.

thanks for the suggestion, we have not tried hooking anything to the Bi Amp Terminals. I will try this next time I'm over and report back.

Also, to answer your question, the subs don't work unless we are going into amp in, no jumpers, and then cross the wires connected to Satellite and even then the sound is quiet. I hope we haven't damaged anything.

Any Fried speaker that has bi amp terminals have a parallel crossover circuit since a series crossover circuit can't be bi amped.
Fried offered the bi amp option for those who want to bi amp the satellites and subwoofers.

The crossover is splitting the signal.

This crossover is similar to the ones used with the C3l and O4 model.
The first one uses the series crossover circuit.

The second one shows the parallel crossover,

When Fried sold the C3L and O4 models they both used the series crossover circuit.
I am unsure why those models have the bi amp terminals.

what would you like pictures of next time i go over?

It would be fairly difficult to a photo of the crossover with all of the foam inside of the subwoofer enclosure.

What happens when you connect the wires to the amp to the bi amp terminals?
BTW only jump the positive terminals not the negative terminals

Hey Jim,

That jumper on yours baffles me. I mean, look at the parallel schematic, then at your jumper. In essence you've effectively jumped past the 200uF and 10uF capacitors in the subwoofer portion of your crossover. Frankly that doesn't strike me as being correct. Unless your subwoofer crossover doesn't hold true to that schematic?

I guess all that I can add past that is that on my latest set of Fried speakers, my amp connects to the "amp in" connections on the subwoofer, and the "to satellite" leads go to the satellites. No jumpers anywhere, and it all seems to match what is seen in the parallel crossover schematic and works correctly as best I can tell.

Ohighway your model has the crossover in the parallel crossover configuration mine are in series.
If I disconnect the jumper to the satellites only the subwoofer plays music.
When connecting the jumper the satellites play after the current is passed through the crossover circuit inside of the subwoofer enclosure.

Maybe the series crossover makes sense here, and introducing a bi amp in there between the woofer and the mid (if that makes any sense). That way by adding jumpers between the "To Sat" and "Bi Amp" you can get the addition of the subwoofer. I am trying to picture how that would be wired but I believe it would mean that the satellites would always get a full signal, with out the benefit of a high pass at the woofer (to the sat).

I gather you, JimPA, are thinking that if Kdj hooks up the amp to the Bi Amp In, maybe you just get bass from the sub?
