Fried Speaker Identification and Hookup

I am glad to hear that you got the speakers working.

Which inductor was faulty the amp or the speakers?

The only place I know that sells the 12mh 14 gauge air core inductors that are used in the satellite subwoofer crossover is Solen.
Also the satellite crossover uses an air core 18 gauge.
Some C3L models used a .5mh and some used .35 mh
Iron core will not give a flat response with a series crossover.
Iron core do not completely discharge like air core inductors.

Congrats! And the listening impression doesn't surprise me, as I always thought the satellites were special (all I had heard before) and Bud Fried had bass down pat!

Hey, how did you end up connecting the speakers to the amps? Just the "Amp In" and the "To Satellites?"

the wiring works as it should Amp to Amp in, Satellite terminals to Satellite speakers.

To find a pair of new speakers that are as accurate as the C3L and O4 models would cost around $7-10k.
The O4 transmission line enclosures outperform any powered subwoofer I have yet to hear.

I enjoyed reading through the thread as you got the speakers working again.! It was a trip down memory lane for me.

The first pair of speakers that I made were the C3Ls, that I bought in kit form. You should have seen me cutting all of the oblique angles on my garage floor with nothing but a straight edge, some clamps and a cheap radial hand saw. I went through some MDF until I got all of the cuts perfect.

Kdj432 there is about twice as much resistance with the Jantzen 18 gauge inductor compared to the Solen 14 gauge.
The sensitivity of the subwoofers is being lowered with the Jantzen inductor.
Adding 1 ohm of resistance is raising the subwoofer Qts. a bit.
I would eventually replace the Jantzen inductor..

Another thing air core inductors completely discharge unlike iron core and are more linear.
I thought I would mention this in case someone decided to replace their inductors in a Fried subwoofer crossover.

Solen is the only vendor I know of that carries that right value of inductors for the Fried crossovers.
When it comes to replacing the 200mfd caps Solen is the only company that makes large value caps.
Parts Express use to carry the Dayton brand 12mh 14 gauge air core inductors and 200mfd caps.
IMHO they stopped selling them since their demand is so little in the market place.

Currently they have the following drivers:

(1) FOCAL - 6K412L - 6.5 Mid/Woofer
(1) San-Speak D2905/9000 Tweeter
(1) Audio Concepts - 70493AC10 - 10" Woofer

The pictures attached are the current home-brew crossovers, but I am having problems finding this schematic online. Does anyone know/have the specs on the Audio Concept AC10 woofer? Any crossover suggestions? Any mods that really make these sing?

Those enclosure are a Fried design not IMF.

Fried never used that model of Scan Speak tweeter or the Audio Concepts 10" woofer.
The 6.5" woofer has a Focal label but that doesn't look like the 6K412L driver.
The cone should be yellow. like the photo below.
One way to check is if the rear of the cone has a honeycomb structure.



Fried did use the Focal 6K412L 6.5" for the C5L model for a short time.
He discontinued the use of the Focal 6.5" driver.
It was impossible to get a flat response with this driver using a 2nd order series crossover.
This is due to due to the harsh resonance above the driver's rolloff.
The 6K412L driver requires a 3rd or 4th order crossover to achieve a flat response.

It would appear that someone tried to clone the C3L and O4 design using different drivers.
This would require a completely different crossover to achieve a flat response.

The Audio Concepts 10" should perform well in the O4 enclosures if using the correct crossover.

BTW I can't read the values of the crossover.

Those photos do show the Focal 6K412L driver Fried used in the C5L model and the correct Hiquphon tweeter.

JimPA - Lets assume that I current have no cross-overs for these drivers and enclosures, what would be your recommendation? Would you use the Hiquphon D2092-9008 tweeter over the Sans-Speak 29 D2905/9000? Assuming the Audio Concept AC10 is adequate, what crossover recommendations do you have?

Using those drivers would require a new crossover design.
I have never used the Scan Speak tweeters.
I do prefer the Hiquphon tweeters.
