G-9700 on ebay...910.00!?!

!!!

This is getting crazy. Sure, the 9700 is 200WPC (factory rating, which we all know is low if it is properly calibrated) and that makes it a very close second to the G-22000 in power output. However, I can't see paying withing spittin distance of the average price of a 22000 to get a 9700, as nice as it is.

The big question is, will this set a precedent for further sales of the 9700, or was it an abberation? Guess we will all find out when a half dozen 9700's show up on ebay next week, which tends to happen anytime an item achieves a new peak price.

Hell, at this rate my collection of Sansui gear should probably be insured by the FDIC as a retirement account.

I have been watching this one in complete amazment and can't for the life of me figure out the reason.
With a number of recent G 9000s, IMHO the superior of the two, being sold in the $400-$500 range.

I think this is one of those freak deals and all I can say is "good for the seller"!

We will soon be seeing alot of G 9700s come to auction and alot of disappointed sellers.

Gary

Gary,

I think you nailed it on all counts. Pretty much what I was saying, that a bunch of them will now come out of the woodwork with the [seller's] expectation that they will see $900 for them, only to have the market momentarily saturated which will deflate the price below the average.

That, and the 9700 isn't as nice [close though it may be] as the 9000.

11:56 am: a sucker is born
11:57 am: a sucker is born

and so it goes...

Yes Kevin, I hope the numbers keep going further out of sight and in the process it drives the price of the better G 9000s right into the ground!
I will be ready to buy another half dozen at rock bottom! :D
Never wanted a 9700 or for the matter G 22000 or 33000 but sure do love those 8 & 9000s.

Please don't go there Brudha!

Just remember, if you ain't got a five-digit number G-series Sansui, you ain't got diddly.......

Um, I'm not quite certain how to respond to this (perhaps in jest?) "shot across the bow" to all "four-digit" Sansui owners. Perhaps I shouldn't, but I'm going to go with first impulse:

If either of the five-digit models sounded as good, I'd consider giving a damn.

Hmmm. Perhaps that was harsh. Lets see...re-read original post...follow thread...get to brash comment...think a moment...deep breath...

No. I'll stick to the statement in bold. :smoke:

I guess I opened myself up to this but here goes.

I don't have a five digit number but I can play Bo Diddly very loud and still have at least a thousand dollars in my pocket at a minimum.

Don't mind me and Brudha, we have been fireing friendly missles for a while now on this subject.

Gamalot (I want all the Sansuis....just as long as it's a G-9000) and I have a history of extolling the virtues of investing in higher end Sansuis. He's got quite a bit of catching up to do in getting his ideas across appropriately.

Zeke, if I'm watching the Miss America Pageant, I don't necessarily care or pay attention about the 'sound' of the contestants' talent or question-and-answer session. Do you realize how large and beautiful the 'knobs' are on the 5-digit series.....??

I know they are valuable receivers, but 910.00? Am I missing something here?

Somebody got an early tax check. As crazy as I am about vintage Sansui components this is not an informed decision. There is plenty of other great stuff listed this week. Hell, wait a few weeks another 9700 is bound to come along at a more reasonable cost. I could do some damage with that kind of bling over in the Kenwood listings :D

Puhleaze. There's plenty of performance in the "4-digit" series of Sansui. Sure, power is great. Just ask those folks with 500 HP cars in crowded metropolitan areas how frequently they get to use that power when traffic is crawling along at 15 M.P.H. :scratch2:

You fit the tool to the purpose. You drive the cheap, small car that's cheap on gas to work and for the fools who might run into you, and let the winter salt eat it away. You save the 'good' vehicle for those special, exhilirating moments out on the country roads. As such with the G-series........

Power, price (aside from this auction), availability, looks. I do prefer the looks of the 9000, but can certainly see why some prefer the G-9700 visually. I don't know enough about proper placement of circuity to know which one is better layed out, but can say that because something looks neater doens't mean it's better. Their may be a good chance it is, but I don't have the electronics or circuit design expertise to say. I can also say that weight doesn't mean everything, so something that weighs more doesn't mean it's better built. Call me crazy, but I can't judge the overall build quality based on looks. Unless there is something obviously awful (1"x2" heat sink on a 400w amp or something to that effect). I'm not saying the G-9000 isn't superior to the G-9700, it from all accounts appears to be, but I'd like to know more about the basis of those comments. Looking at a pic and seeing nicer capacitor covers inside doesn't make me think "wow, thats a lot better built".

I hope Glenn can comment at some point and address what he believes makes something good quality vs average.

That might make a good thread on it's own...

A lot of it is a matter of supply and demand. There seems to be an unending stream of constant G-9000's available each week. Not as many G-9700's. Even fewer that are in that nice of condition. I'd agree that whoever is bidding it up that high definitely needs a reality check though. There also seems to be people willing to pay absurd amounts for the TOTL Z-series lately also. Perhaps there's newfound interest in all the pretty colors of lights.......

One possible reason for there to be an amply supply of G9000's has to do with their aknowledged value: you know, as a seller, that you are likely to get a decent sum. I'm certain that, as other models show their "sale value", we'll see more of them, too.

Is it Minimus 7's that there has been a big run on recently, simply because their perceived value has spiked?

I'm no expert, but you can clearly tell that the G-9700 clearly does not have th Dual Power Supply that distinguished all the truly great receivers. There are only 2 Filter Capactors instead of 4. That's clearly a step down and certainly explains some of the weight loss. On a more trivial note, the G-9000 has a handly little metal strip running along the bottom on each side to tuck in the wires protruding from the side-mounted connectors. I notice that the G-9700 dispenses with that as well.

However, it will be of GREAT interest to see if EW has a preference, although I suspect what it will be.

I stopped being suprised when that G7500 went for well over $500.00 last April!
You guys remember that?

Someone posted a thread on the deal.

Russ

The guy that is the high bidder on this unit was also the high bidder, up until the last minute on my 9900Z that sold last week. He must really want some TOTL Sansui stuff. I hope he gets what he is lookin for. And I must thank him for keeping the bidding going on my 9900Z last week. Now that my big Z is gone I think I am probably gonna have to have a big G of some kind, but if prices keep goin up like this I may have to save a bit longer..

5 digits G Sansui's is like the 12 cylinders of the Jaguars of the 70's-- they got their doors blown off everyday of the week by Chevy 409's, 427's, Dodge & Plymouth Hemi 426's, Olds 442, GTO 389's, Camaro 396, Chevelle 396's just to name a few....Oh.... by the way they are all V8's if you didn't know..

The G9000(G901) series runs rings around the G9700 sonically in just about every MEANINGFUL measurement. I know full well, as I owned one which was fully updated , aligned and modded. Their Tuners performance were similar. However the ultimate overall Performance medal goes to the G9000(G901) which stays in my stable....

The G22000 & G33000 are nice to own for bragging rights. Thoough, for that $$$investment there is so much more you can do sonically today for a lot less cash... a simple 15 year Bryston 4b, will leave both of those units in the history bin at G/Will...... Lets get serious here. $900 for a G9700 is stupidity, plain and simple. just as $2000 is for Sansui T-X1 tuners.
