Gas Prices

Gonefishin,

Great point about boycotting only one or two companies in particular. I think it would be fantastic. As you stated, people are still going to buy gasoline and the 1-day boycott does nothing because they still make their money. If the majority of US consumers stopped buying from only one or two companies they would certainly feel the pinch. So long as everyone is still buying gas, just not their gas, they would be foolish to leave the prices high, thereby giving no incentive to bring people in. I spent some serious time thinking about this last night if you couldn't tell. Now, with the problems regarding spam in this society, how would one go about effectively organizing and implementing such a movement? It sure in fun to think about it.

i live in a small town in mississippi. now it is $155.9 a gallon. i had a pontiac bonneville that got 30mpg. sold it and bought a new tahoe with the 5.3 liter engine 17 miles to the gallon. i love it but the service station loves it more. steve

this tahoe also runs on 85% ethanol does anyone have it in their town and how much does it cost a gallon.

Guys, you are looking at this problem from the wrong way.

Oil companies many times DON'T own the refinery. Besides, we can't build more refining stations. Most are at least 20 years old. Thank the environment wackos.

Now, put yourself in this position.

You are the VP of a major oil company in charge of crude purchasing. You have NO IDEA how much oil OPEC will put on the market next month. It takes awhile for those oil tankers to reach our shores. Then we have to refine most of it. Let's say you as the VP just bought 5 mil barrels of crude. The price was $30 a barrel. The next day OPEC says the are going to increase production 1 mil barrels a day. The price drops down to $20 a barrel.

You as a VP just lost $50 mil in one day.

Of course you hedge prices on the CBOE.

Now if you are smart with your hedging position you will break even.

I'm surprized no one here has mentioned the amount of Federal and State Taxes on a gallon of gas.

In truth, the retailers take advantage of a price spike. They read the news and look at their inventories and adjust prices. Then blame the big bad oil companies..

I've been on both sides of the fence.

Please forgive any spelling mistakes.

Regards,

Joe

I don't feel sorry for any of you in California, you should pay $1.00 more a gallon than everyone else, serves you right for all that beautiful weather, the beaches, the women on the beaches, no blackflies and the lack of a any sort of real winter, plus you get to hobknob with all the movie and music stars, you ain't getting no pity from me!

Another east coast guy who thinks the whole state is like Baywatch! I wouldn't mind it. Look at that pic I took yesterday. There should be hills filled with houses half-way up that gas sign
visible but the cloud cover that's down to 4-500 ft covers it up.
Half my summer's like that at least. July and August suck eggs.

But it was a nice sunny 70 degree Xmas this last year! Cruising on the freeway to my Mom's windows down and diggin it. Not humid either. Nope, never seen snow fall and I'm 49. Don't know how you guy's do it!

Dave, what is the average MPG possible with F-85? Does it burn just like regular gas?

I am all for ethenol use. A renuable source and we can pay farmers to grow it instead of not growing it. To drill for oil in fragile eco system to get a mere 15% of a 6 months use is just stupid, and we the people pay for the search, and the clean up. That is Texas Republicans for you. A short term gain vs a long term solution, well **** the environment!!

21 yrs might be the record
No, I have already brought back @ least two from 2003, but that there are maybe 1/2 a dozen formerly zombie threads now actively (re)circulating after being brought back from 2003 is a record ... it's gotta be a record.

As long as we're on the topic of gasoline prices and such, let's have a look at the current spot price for futures of gasoline and a few of the fossil fuels as of 5:25 am Eastern Time on 9 April 2024:

- Crude $86.89 / bbl
- Brent $90.83 / bbl
- Gasoline $2.75 / gal
- Heating Oil $2.73 / gal
- Natural Gas $1.86 / MMBtu
- Coal $128 / ton(ne)

Here...the equivalent of 5.90 (CDN) per gallon. We just started paying an extra 3 cents per liter on a carbon tax...and so it goes....
