Gas Prices

This is one of those basic truisms and why many implement no religion or politics at holiday gatherings. Was lucky it was the natural order at our house both as a kid and as adult
My family has always been the busting the boy's type when interacting, a lot of vets and it's the same at work. We can have these conversations, if someone actually gets butt hurt, which is rare, they just get piled on and typically see very quickly that they let others get to them, "hey you want another beer?"

We can call each other idiot, moron etc with a smile and chuckle, and that is how it is meant. Thats one of the things that sucks about this format, the majority of "jabs" are probably meant with "love" but that is tough to convey.

Paid $2.759 yesterday here on Long Island NY.

Paid $7.299 last June near SFO filling rental car.

Meanwhile I watched in horror yesterday as the guy in front of me paid $50 for two packs of Winston and one pack of Newports! So glad I quit 36 years ago.

I probably mentioned this earlier, but in the mid-1970s, my brother and I sometimes had the station attendant put only $.50 or $.75 or $1.00’s worth of gas into our blue Plymouth Fury so we could get to and from work for a few more days. For that cost, he’d check the oil and tire pressure and wash the windshield, too. Was probably a gallon or two.

In rural Central Nevada regular gas is $3.29 today. Please note that Nevada does not have a State Income Tax therefore they get the money elsewhere.

I think gas prices may be dictated by the whims of a group of gas-price fairies who are high on Ketamine.
Or it may have something to do with commodities.

One of those two.

We have the highest excise in the world on tobacco here in Australia. Around $56 AUD for a packet. A tin of Erinmore flake is around $149. The idea of the excessive excise is to to deter smokers and reduce their numbers.

The un-affordability has resulted in a flourishing black market and an ironic drop in billions in tobacco excise revenue. So currently, it's like 30's prohibition era USA, there are underground organizations making millions out of it.

Fuel AUD $2.03 a litre (USD $4.92/gallon) this morning for the high octane stuff.

Refined fuel only partially reflects the underlying commodity price. Albeit the lion’s share of profits. Refiners play a game where they shut refiners for maintenance more like the first part you described.

Pipeline operators also effect prices. Lastly and surely least of all the station owners determine mark up.

I had a very frugal friend in B.C. Canada that used to grow and dry his own tobacco.

Yeah I have a friend in Hawaii who does the same. My great grandfather also grew his own, I still have his tobacco cutter.

So after my friend's experiences and having someone on-hand to give advice, I was looking into it. Found out it's a $50,000 fine and probably jail time. The penalties for growing marijuana are less! They love their excise income.

Mine and @hjames state got rid of those a few yrs ago

Yep, we now have a "dispensary" for legal recreational pot on just about every corner here too. In fact, they are just now beginning to issue licenses for "pot bars" as well. Yep, just like yer basic local neighborhood pub for booze, but instead for weed.......

Nice. Well the Commonwealth is pretty jacked up. They are still fighting about how to do sales. All that revenue they have been missing out on.
